Remembering
Dorthy Guianen
Dorothy “Dot” (Ring) Guianen
At 86, Dorothy passed away in her daughter’s home on 20 February, 2010, in Stockton, California.
Dorothy Evelyn (Ring) Guianen (Guynen) born on a prairie farm in Johnson Township, Wells County, North Dakota, on 17 April, 1923, to Gust Ring and Lydia (Kafton) Ring. Dorothy was a friend and sister to 3 brothers and 5 sisters. Dorothy attended Evangelical Lutheran Church and she was confirmed on 10 April, 1938, in Sykeston, North Dakota.
Dorothy met Otto Herman in Bowdon, North Dakota and they got married July 17, 1940. Otto was a farmer and together, they had three children;Wanda, James, and LaVonne. In 1946, Otto and Dorothy packed up their family and moved to Galt, California, where they bought a dairy. Through the years, Dorothy’s children graced her with; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild.
In the early 60’s she worked as a gourmet counselor for the Broadway stores in Los Angeles. Later, she owned and operated the Shade Shop in Long Beach, California.
Dorothy enjoyed playing the organ and she liked to square dance. Among the many talents Dorothy had, she was an enthusiastic painter and her kids proudly accepted ownership of her fine paintings. She also enjoyed crocheting and embroidery until her fingers and eyesight started failing. For someone who shuddered at the thought of touching worms, she loved fishing. On the delta or the many lakes she visited during her travels. To satisfy her feelings of “wander-lust”, whether it was camping in the high Sierras, or a motel at the beach, she was comfortable in her travels. (I’m sure her urge to travel was a “left-over” from boredom on the farm in her early years.) Dorothy, with her daughter and son-in-law, attended and became a member of St Peter Lutheran Church. Dorothy was a member of the Lodi Moose Lodge and enjoyed many friendships of the people she met there.
She is survived by: her daughter Wanda (Herman) Hancock, son-in-law Robert of Stockton, CA, son, James Herman, daughter-in-law Diana of Sparks, NV, and daughter, LaVonne (Herman) Whinery of La Pine, OR; sister Vera Duggan of Desconso, CA, sister, Eva Santos(Al) of Sparks, NV, brother, Edwin Ring (Esther) of Lodi, CA, brother, Raymond Ring (ArlaJean) of Lodi, CA, brother, Benny Ring (Lil) of Lodi, CA, sister, Betty Ann Lee of Lodi, CA, sister, Vivian Rostomily (Wendell) of Lodi, CA, and sister, Darlene MacDonald of Lodi, CA. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gust and Lydia Ring.
