Edir Azevedo Corbett

July 23, 1940 - April 21, 2024

Surrounded by her loving family Edir peacefully passed on April 21, 2024.

Edir Pereira was born in Brazil on July 23, 1940. In Brazil she met and married the first love of her life, and the father of her future children, Antonio Azevedo, on September 27, 1958. While Antonio worked as a butcher in Rio de Janeiro, Edir had their first child, Fernando in 1959. Coming to America for more opportunities for their small family, they moved to Stockton, CA and arrived on July 23, 1962, which was Edir’s 22nd birthday. Antonio continued his career as a butcher at Alpine Meat Packing Company. Edir took care of the family, and almost a year to the date of their arriving in Stockton, their first daughter Angela was born. Edir gave birth to Liene at the end of 1964 to complete their family. Edir and Antonio taught their children their strong work ethics and were grateful to raise their children in Stockton. While the children were young, the family participated in Portuguese community events, and they were able to visit Brazil in 1973 and again in 1987. Unfortunately, that was the last trip they had together, when Antonio became ill and passed away on January 21, 1988.

In 1992, through a neighbor, Tamara introduced Edir to Robert Corbett, a Korean veteran, and retired Police Chief in Missouri, who was also Tamara’s father. With Robert, Edir found a second chance of finding true love and they married on May 5, 1997. With this marriage, Robert brought his 2 adult children, Tamara and Robert and his young son Phillip. Edir and Robert loved to travel to Hawaii and frequently went to casinos. Edir was very lucky and loved to gamble. After 16 years of marriage Robert passed on March 30, 2013.

While her children were growing, Edir took a job at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the Housekeeping Department, which lasted for almost 20 years. She loved her job, her co-workers, and the patients, and was occasionally asked to be a Spanish and Portuguese translator. Edir was a wonderful cook and shared her recipes with her daughters who have passed the recipes down to their children. Edir was a woman of faith and loved her family, grandchildren, and friends.

Edir is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Antonio Azevedo and Robert Corbett, numerous Brazilian family members and friends.

She is survived by her son, Fernando (Susan) Azevedo, daughters Angie (Mike) Kant and Liene (Gary) Roman. Her grandchildren Natalia Roman, Courtney (Spencer) Ferdun, Danielle (Joey) Novara, Lauren Azevedo, Lindsey Azevedo and great grandchild Silas Ferdun, stepchildren Tamara Rider, Robert (Melinda) Corbett, Phillip Corbett, several step-grandchildren and great step-granchildren.

Services will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park’s Evergreen Chapel on Tuesday, May 7th at 10 am, interment to follow.
