Arleen Mataga

June 15, 1946 - February 18, 2025

Arleen Mataga, 78, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away on Feb. 18, 2025, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Yosh Mataga of Stockton, Calif., daughters Kathryn (Stephen Shimane) of Elk Grove, Calif., and Carolyn (Robert Dobler) of Lodi, Calif., grandchildren Kaylee, Alyssa, (Michael), Evan and Brooke, honorary son Cameron Izuno (Jessica del Mundo) of Los Angeles, Calif., and grandsons Jace and Cade.

Born in Chicago on Jun.15, 1946 to Tamaki and Carl Kawagoye, Arleen was the youngest of two children, sister to Alan Kawagoye (Lyra Bontigao), who preceded her in death. She was a daughter who loved (and was best friends with) her mom, a devoted granddaughter, a feisty sister, a teacher and learner at heart, a dedicated wife, a loving mother and the most amazing grandmother. (She often joked that had she known how amazing grandchildren were, she would have had them first.) Beloved as a good neighbor and a genuine and dedicated friend, Arleen kept in touch with family and friends and was known for regularly visiting them whenever she was in the area, picking up as if no time had passed.

Raised in Los Angeles, Arleen graduated from Dorsey High School and earned her bachelor’s degree at California State University in Los Angeles, where she was a member of Kappa Zeta Phi sorority. She met husband Yosh in 1960, and they married in 1969. In 1980, with their two young daughters in tow, Arleen and Yosh left Los Angeles for Lodi, where they established a successful family business selling automobiles under the Mataga brand. Still operating 45 years later, Mataga of Stockton is a Cadillac and GMC dealership run by their daughters Kathryn, Carolyn and an amazing team.

Before retiring to raise her children, Arleen began her career as a teacher. In addition to teaching science and home economics, she taught the GATE program at Byrd Junior High School in Los Angeles. Throughout her life, Arleen actively gave back to the community and volunteered her time, energy and support to many, helping out in her daughters’ and grandchildren’s schools, as well as supporting local programming and arts.

Arleen volunteered with the Lodi Library, California Museum in Sacramento (Special Program: The Time of Remembrance), annually serving as a docent and educator on the Japanese American internment camps of World War II, and Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Her family had been incarcerated at Gila River, Ariz., from 1944-1945, and she had shared the experience to raise awareness about this lesser-known, dark chapter in U.S. history, with the goal of educating the public and next generation in order to prevent a recurrence of a similar denial of American civil rights. The Lodi chapter of the JACL recently honored Arleen with an award for 40 years of selfless service, representing the chapter and civil rights.

Together with her husband, Arleen was a member of the Elks Lodge in Stockton, Calif. where they enjoyed social events with dinner and dancing, and the Woodbridge Golf & Country Club in Woodbridge, Calif. where she served as captain of the women’s nine-hole group “Fore Tee Niners” for more than 20 years.

Arleen was frequently remembered for her dancing at various functions. She had a passion for teaching people how to cha-cha, swing, two-step, and line dance, and would commonly be the first one on the dance floor and the last one to leave.

An avid skier, Arleen skied often with Yosh in their youth at Mammoth, and with her children and even her grandchildren in Lake Tahoe. She enjoyed baking, was a great cook, and was extraordinarily proud that she was passing down her recipes to her children and grandchildren, so they could carry on her traditions at Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

She loved to travel, always saying how wonderful and unexpected it was since she and Yosh both grew up so poor. She said that good luck, opportunities, risks, and decisions they made took them from being a teacher and a grocery box boy (which she was perfectly happy with) to living a life full of unique experiences with the most amazing things, and cruising and seeing the world with friends and family.

Arleen would say that she had a wonderful life and truly enjoyed all of the time she spent with those dear to her. She would say she had the most fun time connecting and laughing, reminiscing, and creating new special memories. She will be dearly missed by all those who truly knew her.

Services

Friends of Arleen are welcome to join in remembering her life on Saturday, Apr. 5th, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Woodbridge Golf and Country Club (open house style).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lodi JACL at: Japanese American Citizens League, P.O. Box 2454, Lodi, Calif. 95241, in Arleen’s honor.

Jacqueline Corll

October 11, 1937 - February 17, 2025

Jacqueline (Jackie) Ann Corll was born on October 11th, 1937 in Lodi, California. She passed away Monday, February 17th, 2025, at 87 years of age.

Jackie attended elementary school at Victor Elementary, along with Lockeford Elementary in California. In her youth, Jackie helped out at her family's general store where she honed her talent for beautiful gift wrapping and decorating- a tradition she continued throughout the holidays. Her attention to detail always made you feel special when you opened that box from California.

Jackie met the love of her life, her sweetheart, Everett Corll, while she attended and graduated from Lodi Union High School in Lodi, California. Jackie continued her education at Humphrey’s Business College and later Delta Business College, both located in Stockton, California. She retired as a Budget Technician at Lodi Unified School District in October of 1999, after 32 years.

Jacqueline Ann Hensel and Everett Glen Corll married on August 17th, 1957 at the Methodist Church in Reno, Nevada. Raising two wonderful children, Martin Corll and Kandis Corll-Rios. They enjoyed traveling around California for family adventures with Marty and Kandi for Sprint car races.

Throughout her life, Jackie greatly enjoyed cooking, crafting, discovering new things, working with technology, and tending to the care of others around her.  Ever the hostess, a trip to their property was a welcoming experience filled with love. From working on the farm all day and enjoying evening sunsets, to making old fashioned ice cream - her love was endless.

Finding a place to settle down, Everett and Jackie lived over 35 wonderful years in Galt, California. It was there, that she enjoyed many forms of crafting; crocheting, creating beautiful wreaths, and Diamond Dotz art. With her background in technical education, she often was found working with computers, and teaching her family techniques on working with electronics - always ahead of her time, she loved to learn new things.

Additionally, finding a healthy love for genealogy and ancestry, she uncovered a wealth of historical information about her family and ancestors. From successfully completing much of her family tree to learning exciting information about the generations of ancestors who immigrated (some even from Ellis Island). Engrossed in this knowledge, she completed several ancestry books for her family, with the intent for them to be passed down for generations to come.

Jackie and Everett embraced dirt track Sprint Car racing in their retirement years. They traveled to many race tracks, in and out of state, with their 5th wheel (trailer) in tow enjoying their time as empty nesters. After the passing of her highschool sweetheart, Everett, in 2015 she relocated to Lodi, CA. It was there that she lived out the remainder of her life enjoying the peace, tranquility, and companionship of her beloved family and neighbors.

Jackie is preceded in death by her husband, Everett Corll. She is survived by her son Martin, daughter Kandis (husband John,) her four Grandchildren (Kerry, Ryan, Brandon, and Jessica,) and four Great Grandchildren (Sierra, Mason, Lane, and James.)

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association, Breast Cancer Awareness or the charity of your choice.

Marilyn Schrock

July 20, 1939 - February 10, 2025

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Marilyn Jean Schrock of Lodi, California, who passed away on February 10th due to an unexpected illness.

Marilyn was born July 20, 1939 to Nicholas and Barbara (Bruettig) Kost in Chicago, Illinois. She was the first of three sisters, including Pam (Breckenridge) and Linda (Bell).

After attending Catholic elementary schools, she went on to graduate from Nazareth Academy, an all girl Catholic high school, in 1957. Gregarious and outgoing, it was during these school years she forged the relationships with her lifelong group of “angel” friends.

In 1958 she married Ken Kadera, whom she met working at International Harvester. She then became a full time mother and housewife with the arrival of her son, Scott and daughter, Barbara.

After moving to Modesto, California in 1969, she eventually divorced. The following several years were a particularly happy time in her life, while she balanced being a single mother, working at Valley Asbestos Company as the office manager / book- keeper, and socializing with friends.

In 1977, she remarried to Phillip Schrock, a co-worker at Valley, and became the step-mother to Stewart, Stanley and Christine. In 1978, she moved to Lodi, California. She worked two years as a new account representative at Bank of America, and then for 18 years as a technician for the Lodi Unified School District in the Facilities and Planning department.

After retirement, she did volunteer work, traveled with Phil, and developed a passion for gambling at the Jackson Rancheria Casino, her “second home.” She enjoyed the drive to the casino through the beautiful countryside while listening to books on tape. She also loved and was beloved by her many friends at the casino, who called her “Mama” and “Miss Jackson.”

Marilyn will be remembered for her boundlessly giving nature, her beautiful appearance, and her delight in the lives of family and friends. She was the communication hub of the family who kept us all apprised of the happenings in each other’s lives. She loved people, the ocean, reading; Jeopardy, Friends and other TV shows; movies, Neil Diamond, shopping, and bi-weekly trips to the casino. Loving and caring, hardworking and organized, fun-loving and energetic, naturally joyous, she touched the hearts and left a lasting impact on all she met. She was a class act.

She is predeceased by her mother and father, first husband, and second husband, Phil Schrock.

She will be sorely missed by her beloved children, Scott Kadera and Barbara Heinle; step-children Stewart Schrock (wife Lisa), Stanley Schrock (wife Hope), Christine Shuffield (husband Kerry); grandchildren Monica Fimbrez, Karleigh Heinle, Dillon Schrock, Trevor Schrock, Hillary Schrock, Amanda Bale, Ashley Schrock, Jacob Shuffield, Jena Shuffield, Brian Heinle and Heather Brester; great-grandchildren Jeremiah Heinle, Evelyn Schrock, Scarlett Davis and Austin Stumpf; sisters Pam Breckenridge (husband Dick) and Linda Bell (husband Doug); and many nieces and nephews.

Her ashes will be interred at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery next to her late husband.

Please leave your condolences below.
