Victoria VanBuren

December 23, 1922 - September 27, 2019

Victoria Van Buren Dec. 23, 1922 - Sept. 27,2019 Victoria was born in Merced County to Felix and Guadalupe Jimenez on Dec. 23rd. For most of her young life her family lived in Riverbank. In her twenties she met her husband, Jim Van Buren, one day when she was getting mail from the post office with her sister. It was love at first sight for both of them, she fell for his bright blue eyes and tall stature. They were later married on January 23, 1945. Their first son, James, was born on Dec. 11, 1945. The family lived in the Bay Area for a short time and settled in Stockton in 1948. Their second son, John, was born on July 25, 1950. Victoria was a busy stay at home mom who also spent her time volunteering for different charities and sewing for her church. Victoria was her mother's caretaker until her passing. Victoria adored her family and holidays were very important to her. She always decorated her house to fit the occasion. Hosting family reunions at her mother's home brought her many happy times. Her husband worked part time at the YMCA and in 1957 she joined to learn how to swim, play volleyball and racquetball. She was a very good volleyball and racquetball player. Because of the YMCA her and her husband spent countless hours staying active and in later years taught their grandchildren how to swim. Vickie loved hosting family reunions at her mother's house. Many happy memories were made in that home. We'll remember the volleyball games, dancing and cherish the pictures and family reunion books. Victoria was fluent in English and Spanish; she taught her grandchildren enough Spanish to be able to communicate with their great-grandmother. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents and 7 brothers, who she adored. She is survived by her sons, Jim (Vicki) of Stockton and John of Riverbank; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Her sister, Margaret of Tracy; her brother, Efran of Modesto; along with numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-laws and other relatives. Gravesite services will be held at Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Michael Buckenham

April 7, 1937 - September 24, 2019

Michael T. Buckenham April 7, 1937 - Sept. 24, 2019 Michael Trevor Buckenham was born in Thames Ditton, England April 7, 1937 to Amelia Buckenham Weillie. Raised just outside of England, Michael and his too many to count cousins happily played along the Thames River, until being evacuated during the bombing raids of WWII. Mike and his cousin Brian were sent to the south of England to live with a host family, while his Mother stayed behind to help with the war effort. When reunited Michael and his mother set out for America aboard the Queen Mary, living on Mid-Way Island for a time and then on to the States. Upon arrival Michael and his mother moved around a bit finally settling in Stockton, California, and Stockton will never be the same. He played hard: motorcycles, cars, golf, planes, guns, skis, boats, and bows. Nothing was too fast or too dangerous. He loved hard. He and his wife Shyla were married more than 60 years and raised 3 children, Mike Junior, Kellene and Corey, along with 7 grandchildren. Mike was also a master craftsman and enjoyed sharing his talents in wood working, gunsmithing, fitting golf clubs, and building miniature steam engines. Mike Sr. also worked hard. Working for Thornton Motors and then for Porsche Cars North America as their regional manager. Mike then opened his own auto repair shop serving up customer service, stories and laughs for over 40 years. The outpouring of love and support when the shop recently experienced a devastating fire is proof that he was loved by loyal friends and customers as well as his family, who all will continue to tell his tales.

Mike lost his battle with cancer on September 24, 2019 and is survived by his wife, Shyla; brother, John Weille; sisters, Jane Norick and Jean Miller; daughter, Kellene Reinschell (Todd); sons, Michael Buckenham (Nancy), and Corey Buckenham (Kristin); grandchildren, Trever Buckenham (Mary), Kyle Buckenham, Ian Reinschell, Colin Reinschell, Reilly Buckenham, Sophie Buckenham, and Sydnee Buckenham.

Richard Ellsworth Sr.

August 6th, 1938 - September 23rd, 2019

Richard Warren Ellsworth, born 1938 in Caldwell Idaho to Warren and Gertrude Ellsworth, survived by wife, Marlene Kay Ellsworth and children Richard Ellsworth Jr, Christopher Ellsworth and Rebekah Tobar. Dad passes with 10 grandkids and 11 great grandkids

That was our Dad. Preacher, pastor, missionary pilot. He worked very hard to make sure that we were fed and had a roof over our head. Rick and I were pretty young when we went moving around the country as Dad prepared to go to Brazil to be a missionary pilot and in 1970 that’s exactly where we went. Mom and Dad, me and Rick, oh, and my little sister Becka in mom’s tummy. If that’s not a testimony of our parents faith and trust in the Lord, to fly to a strange place with two little boys while pregnant, I don’t know what is. After a couple years sharing the gospel in Brazil we moved back to California and ended up in Lodi where Dad was an associate pastor of Hammer Lane Baptist Church in Stockton for a year. In 1973 the church moved to Lodi and became Maranatha Baptist Church where Dad became pastor. He pastored there until 1983 when he, Mom and Becka moved to Sacramento and became a part of Citadel Baptist Church where he worked in various positions in the church and in the school. In 1997 he and Mom started a care home for elderly women where he worked until 2008 when it closed and he became the pastor of Meadowview Bible in Sacramento. After 2 years at Meadowview Mom and Dad joined Sutter Creek Baptist Church where Dad worked as associate pastor until 2016. This was about the time Dad‘s Alzheimer’s prevented him from teaching and preaching in an official capacity. He would still try to teach and preach at all of our family gatherings with a little bit of help from the rest of us. It was so great to hear him preach the gospel which was one of the few things that Dad could speak pretty clearly about, we all knew where it was coming from.

He wasn’t a perfect Dad as none are, he was a good dad who did the very best that he could with what he had been given in life as do we all. Most important he gave his kids the only sure foundation in life, that is the free gift of Jesus Christ. He also did the two things that were most important to him in his entire life, to teach the Bible and preach the very good, great, incredible news “the gospel” of Jesus Christ. To give to us and as many people that would listen the only true foundation to stand on as they pass through this short life. To preach the gospel, that all people have fallen short of God’s perfect righteousness and that there is an emptiness in our hearts that can only be filled by God and that whosoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have everlasting life. It never bothered us that preaching the gospel was his priority because this life is very temporary and the good news of the gospel and the free gift of Jesus Christ is eternal and certainly the most important thing in life.

We love dad, we are very blessed that he is such a large part of all of our lives. We will miss him for a little while but then we will spend eternity with him because he introduced us to the only path to that life, Jesus.

Dad will be interned with military honors at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery with a small family gathering on October 10. There will be an open house celebration of Dad‘s life at Mom’s house on Saturday the 12th between 1 PM and 5 PM. Please come and share memories of Dad with everyone.

Cherokee Memorial is honored to serve the Ellsworth family.
