After battling type-1 diabetes for 55+ years, and fighting his best against cancer, Duane Arthur Simpfenderfer Sr., age 69, passed away on Sunday, October 13th, rid of all ailments and free of all pain. Big Duane was born on June 17th, 1950, in Lodi, CA, to Art and LaVerna. Gary Guthrie

June 15th, 1945 - October 13th, 2019

Gary E. Guthrie passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the age of 74 due to a year-long and complicated recovery after a triple bypass surgery.

He will be greatly missed.

Gary was born to Naomia “Jenny” Mitchell and Louis Terrill Guthrie in Pittsburg, Kansas. He had seven siblings, Preston, Alvin, Dennis, Joy, Dale, Steve and Terrill.

He moved to Stockton, CA around the age of 11 with his mom, and brothers, Steve and Terrill. He attended Fremont Elementary and graduated from Franklin High School in 1965 then joined the army. Once he was out of the army he started working at Defense Depot in Tracy, CA and retired with 39 years of service in 2001.

He had two sons with his first wife Donna; Gary E. Guthrie Jr. who preceded him in death in 1997 and James Guthrie. In 1986, he married his wife, Cora (Coco) of 34 years where they raised their daughter Kalia Johnston in Linden, CA.

He was an ASA umpire for the City of Stockton and surrounding cities for many years in the 70’s and 80’s. He played men’s fast pitch softball as a pitcher for Ocie’s Glass along with his brothers Steve and Terrill. He was his daughters little league softball coach where he taught her and her team the tricks of the trade and how to be winners. He helped develop their confidence and how to play ball.

After he retired from the Defense Depot, Tracy, he worked at Auto-Zone in Stockton, CA for 15 years where really enjoyed talking to customers and selling them car parts.

Gary will be missed incredibly by his family, his wife Coco, son Jimmy, daughter, Kalia, and grandchildren, Garrett Guthrie, Nicole Smith and Taylor Guthrie. He will also be missed by brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews.  He was known for being kind and down-to-earth.

As calm and quiet as Gary was, he had quirks about him that made his presence be known at the least expected times such as whistling really loud or startling you with a loud noise. To know him was to truly love him.
