Malcolm Laurence Goodell

November 4, 1933 - August 28, 2020

Former Lodi High School Mathematics teacher Malcolm (Mac) Laurence Goodell passed away August 28 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in East Swanzey, New Hampshire on November 4, 1933, the second of six children. Times were hard in those Depression years so he had to work from an early age. Despite their hardships, his mother, Elizabeth, made sure all her children attended school. Upon graduating from high school, he joined the Marines, eventually serving in the Korean War. Before being deployed overseas, he was stationed in Memphis, Tennessee, where he met the love of his life, Martha Ann Mason. They wrote each other every day while he was in Korea, and married shortly after he returned to the States.

Thanks to the GI Bill, Mac became the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Keene Teachers College in 1956. He taught at Troy High School for 3 years before receiving a Fellowship to attend Harvard University. Upon receiving his Masters in Education from Harvard, the family, which included four children under the age of 6, moved across the country to Lodi in 1961. He educated a generation of Lodians before retiring in 1998. Following his retirement he started a travel agency called M-and-M Travel. While raising their children, they travelled across the country every other summer to visit family in New Hampshire and Tennessee. For the most part they camped, exposing their children to unique and memorable historical, scenic and cultural experiences which resonate in their lives to this day.

After their children left home Mac and Martha continued to travel, enjoying numerous trips to Hawaii and Mexico where Mac pursued his avid interest in golf. He routinely competed in amateur tournaments, especially through the auspices of SIRS, Sons in Retirement. A devout Christian, Mac lived a life of honor and commitment to his Lord. He was active in church life, teaching Sunday school courses and serving as church Treasurer for several years until his declining health forced him to resign. Still, he faithfully attended Temple Baptist Church every Sunday for nearly 60 years.

Goodell is survived by Martha, his wife of 67 years, daughters Rebecca (Michael Messer) Goodell, Julie (Daniel) Torres, Michael and Jeremy (Kimberly) Goodell. He leaves eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Due to Covid restrictions funeral services are limited to family members only.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Lodi House.

Shirley Sanchez Smith

Shirley Sanchez Smith, brave warrior to illness and lifelong resident of California, died on Friday, August 28, 2020, at the young age of 58 years old with her loved ones by her hospital bedside.  

Shirley is survived by her father, Tómas Sanchez Jr.; her husband, Russell James Smith; her daughters, Vanessa Chanté Jara, Candace Tiéja Smith and Jessica Chérie Smith; her son-in-law, Matthew Joseph Jara; and her grandchildren, Jason Isaiah Smith, Angelina Raquel Jara, Victoria Bella Conn, Natalie Gabriela Jara and Liam James Conn. She is predeceased by her grandson, Gabriel Marcus Jara; her mother-in-law, Elizabeth J. Smith; her father-in-law, William C. Smith; and her mother, Alicia Sanchez.

Shirley was born in San José, CA on January 19, 1962 to Tómas Sanchez Jr. and Alicia Sanchez. After a 3-week whirlwind romance, Shirley was engaged to her prince charming, Russell Smith. Six months later, on August 14, 1982, they were married. Shortly after, on August 13, 1984, she welcomed her first baby girl to the world. Following, on August 24, 1989, she welcomed twin daughters. Shirley was a lovingly devoted wife and mother. Her three daughters were her whole world. Still, she lived for the day that she would become a grandmother. Her dreams came true between 2007 & 2018, when she happily embraced five new additions to the family. She truly lived each and every day for her grandchildren. No matter the pain she may have been suffering through, the joy her grandchildren brought her always put a smile on her face.

Early in her career, she worked as an esthetician and hairdresser, but later kept that as a side talent for her family and friends. Shirley can best be remembered in her stars and stripes jacket getting kids pumped up to support their schools by selling Gift Checks Inc. coupon books-- there was no deal she could pass up! When she wasn’t working with schools or helping at Catechism and RCIA, she was at the flea market finding bargains.

Her will in life was to enjoy each day to its fullest. She was goofy and full of life. She had the most genuine laugh, biggest smile, and kindest heart. Even on her lowest days, she would make sure that everyone else was taken care of first. She was a selfless woman who endlessly strove to improve the lives of others. She will be greatly missed by all. 

SERVICE

A funeral service is scheduled for 12:00pm on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery, 14165 Beckman Road; Lodi, CA 95240. The viewing will be held prior to the funeral service on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 between 9:00am-11:30am, 831 Industrial Way; Lodi, CA 95240. 

Due to COVID-19, there will only be five people allowed in the viewing room at one time, masks required. There are no restrictions at the graveside for the funeral; however, masks are highly recommended.

Leslie Scott

June 1, 1947 - August 26, 2020

Leslie Eugene Scott passed away on Aug. 26, 2020, at age 73. Les was born on June 1, 1947, in Visalia, CA, to Vernon and Betty Mae Scott. He spent most of his childhood in Paraguay, El Salvador, and Iran due to his father's job with the U.S. Foreign Service. During that time, Les became somewhat of a child tennis prodigy.

Les graduated from Lemoore High School in 1965. He attended UCLA for his B.A. degree, and the University of Washington's Pacific Coast Banking School for his M.A. After holding various high-level banking positions, he became CEO at a family-owned business in Lodi until his retirement after 27 years of service, helping turn the business into a household name.

Les had a passion for dogs and automobile racing. He was a familiar face at Stockton 99 Speed Way as a stock car co-owner and co-sponsor. His dog, appropriately named 99, was rescued by Les from the center divide of Highway 99 on a stormy night, and his current dog, Desi, is a rescue dog from Virginia.

Nora Love

July 24, 1930 – August 26, 2020

Nora (Ziewitz) Love, aged 90, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2020. She was born July 24, 1930 in Mena, Arkansas to Cleo and Louis Ziewitz. She married James Love on May 22, 1948, the day after she graduated from high school. James and Nora moved from Oklahoma to California in 1951. Nora worked for many years for Nugget Food Distribution, where she did clerical work until she retired. James and Nora spent many years traveling around the United States in their motorhome with their poodle, Mickey. Nora also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Nora is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years James Love, and daughter Sharon Diane Love, and her Great-Grandson James Matthew Love. Nora is survived by her son Jim (Pat); brother Wayne (Lacreta); grandchildren Jeremy (Anita), Melanie (Wes), and Matthew (Danielle); great-grandchildren Desiree (Tom), Lauren, Zachary, Samuel, Genevieve and nieces Margo and Miranda.  Nora is also survived by many close friends and family. 

Services will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi, CA on September 1, 2020 at 11:00am. Due to COVID, the services will be graveside and limited to close family.

Kenneth Heinitz

December 13, 1931 - August 24, 2020

Kenneth Harold Heinitz was a lifetime resident of Lodi, where he married his high school sweetheart and raised his loving family. You could find Ken as a baseball coach and Boy Scout leader. Ken was an avid fisherman and golfer and enjoyed watching all sports. After retiring from a 30+ year career at AT&T he and his wife Mae traveled the country in their 5th wheel and eventually selected Arizona as a second home.
One of Ken's favorite past times was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be forever remembered as a sweet, charming, social, proud and loyal man. He lived a long full life and enjoyed his many friends. Christmas Eve at Ken's house was always a special day for the entire family, it will not be the same without him.

Ken is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Maggie Heinitz; his loving wife of 60+ years, Violet Mae Kundert; and his grandson, Jason. He is survived by his children, Randy (Laura), Rob (Kathleen), and Jeff (Kristi); grandchildren, Grant, Andrew, Elizabeth, David, Robert Jr, Chelsey, Madeline, Cameron and Tyler; great grandchildren, Giada, Dane, Talisa, Preston, Jason, Emmett, and Silas; and his brother, Don (Marge).

Virgil William Ashbaugh

October 5, 1943 - August 23, 2020

Virgil William Ashbaugh, 76, died unexpectedly on August 23rd, 2020 at Yuma Regional Hospital, Arizona. He was born on October 5th, 1943 In Lodi, California.  Son of Bill and Verna Ashbaugh and brother to Jerry Ashbaugh, all deceased.

Virgil graduated from Lodi High School in 1962, he was an avid and proud member of Future Farmers of America throughout high school.  After graduating, he was employed by M&R Packing and progressed into agricultural farming in the San Joaquin County.  He was a hard working man and never really retired.  His architectural endeavors was his passion and his hidden talent. 

He married his high school sweetheart, Carla Gnekow, in 1964 and they settled in the Lodi area.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters and their spouses, Vicki (David) Zeyen and Kelly (Courtney) Jensen.  He was the beloved “Papa” to his four grandchildren, Zachary Zeyen, Lexi Zeyen, Bailey Jensen and Delaney Jensen, who all held a special place in his heart.

A memorial will be held at a later date due to Covid 19.

Roy Millar

Roy Millar May 28, 1924 - August 22, 2020 On Sunday, August 22, 2020.

Roy Millar, loving husband, father of two, and grandfather of five, passed away at the age of 96. Roy was born on May 28, 1924 in Antioch, CA to Pedro "Pete" Alcala Millar and Eluteria Espinoza. He was one of thirteen children. By the age of 17 he had built 7 houses and volunteered into the Army. A WWII Veteran who fought on serval islands in the Pacific, to include the battles for Leyte and the Guadalcanal. He worked for over 20 years as an Appraiser in the Tax Assessor Office for San Joaquin County. On March 31, 1963 he married Gloria Joan Ciccone. They raised two sons, Robert and Randall who then delivered upon them 5 grandsons. Roy was a member of the Sister City Association, had a passion for photography, and considered a world traveler. He was known for his kind and compassionate spirit as well as his countless stories accumulated over decades of experience. He endured many hardships early in his life, yet still dedicated himself to success. His ambition ensured his successors would have a foundation with which to build themselves upon. He was a man who did not understand what it meant to rest as he always had his eyes fixed on the next bit of knowledge to learn, project to do, or place to see. And now his legacy will live on in the stories he once told, now recounted by his sons and grandsons.
