Malcolm Laurence Goodell

November 4, 1933 - August 28, 2020

Former Lodi High School Mathematics teacher Malcolm (Mac) Laurence Goodell passed away August 28 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in East Swanzey, New Hampshire on November 4, 1933, the second of six children. Times were hard in those Depression years so he had to work from an early age. Despite their hardships, his mother, Elizabeth, made sure all her children attended school. Upon graduating from high school, he joined the Marines, eventually serving in the Korean War. Before being deployed overseas, he was stationed in Memphis, Tennessee, where he met the love of his life, Martha Ann Mason. They wrote each other every day while he was in Korea, and married shortly after he returned to the States.

Thanks to the GI Bill, Mac became the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Keene Teachers College in 1956. He taught at Troy High School for 3 years before receiving a Fellowship to attend Harvard University. Upon receiving his Masters in Education from Harvard, the family, which included four children under the age of 6, moved across the country to Lodi in 1961. He educated a generation of Lodians before retiring in 1998. Following his retirement he started a travel agency called M-and-M Travel. While raising their children, they travelled across the country every other summer to visit family in New Hampshire and Tennessee. For the most part they camped, exposing their children to unique and memorable historical, scenic and cultural experiences which resonate in their lives to this day.

After their children left home Mac and Martha continued to travel, enjoying numerous trips to Hawaii and Mexico where Mac pursued his avid interest in golf. He routinely competed in amateur tournaments, especially through the auspices of SIRS, Sons in Retirement. A devout Christian, Mac lived a life of honor and commitment to his Lord. He was active in church life, teaching Sunday school courses and serving as church Treasurer for several years until his declining health forced him to resign. Still, he faithfully attended Temple Baptist Church every Sunday for nearly 60 years.

Goodell is survived by Martha, his wife of 67 years, daughters Rebecca (Michael Messer) Goodell, Julie (Daniel) Torres, Michael and Jeremy (Kimberly) Goodell. He leaves eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Due to Covid restrictions funeral services are limited to family members only.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Lodi House.

Cherokee Memorial is honored to serve the Goodell family.

Shirley Sanchez Smith

Shirley Sanchez Smith, brave warrior to illness and lifelong resident of California, died on Friday, August 28, 2020, at the young age of 58 years old with her loved ones by her hospital bedside.

Shirley is survived by her father, Tómas Sanchez Jr.; her husband, Russell James Smith; her daughters, Vanessa Chanté Jara, Candace Tiéja Smith and Jessica Chérie Smith; her son-in-law, Matthew Joseph Jara; and her grandchildren, Jason Isaiah Smith, Angelina Raquel Jara, Victoria Bella Conn, Natalie Gabriela Jara and Liam James Conn. She is predeceased by her grandson, Gabriel Marcus Jara; her mother-in-law, Elizabeth J. Smith; her father-in-law, William C. Smith; and her mother, Alicia Sanchez.

Shirley was born in San José, CA on January 19, 1962 to Tómas Sanchez Jr. and Alicia Sanchez. After a 3-week whirlwind romance, Shirley was engaged to her prince charming, Russell Smith. Six months later, on August 14, 1982, they were married. Shortly after, on August 13, 1984, she welcomed her first baby girl to the world. Following, on August 24, 1989, she welcomed twin daughters. Shirley was a lovingly devoted wife and mother. Her three daughters were her whole world. Still, she lived for the day that she would become a grandmother. Her dreams came true between 2007 & 2018, when she happily embraced five new additions to the family. She truly lived each and every day for her grandchildren. No matter the pain she may have been suffering through, the joy her grandchildren brought her always put a smile on her face.

Early in her career, she worked as an esthetician and hairdresser, but later kept that as a side talent for her family and friends. Shirley can best be remembered in her stars and stripes jacket getting kids pumped up to support their schools by selling Gift Checks Inc. coupon books-- there was no deal she could pass up! When she wasn’t working with schools or helping at Catechism and RCIA, she was at the flea market finding bargains.

Her will in life was to enjoy each day to its fullest. She was goofy and full of life. She had the most genuine laugh, biggest smile, and kindest heart. Even on her lowest days, she would make sure that everyone else was taken care of first. She was a selfless woman who endlessly strove to improve the lives of others. She will be greatly missed by all.
