Robert Mertz

June 03, 1923 - February 01, 2022

Bob tidied his desk and departed this life on February 1, 2022. He was born on June 3,1923 and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he would later meet his wife, Gwen, whom he was happily married to for 78 yrs. Bob married his childhood sweetheart, Gwen Klein, on September 2, 1944, and was discharged from the US Army at Ft. Ord on December 16, 1944. He later attended Marquette University and graduated from Santa Clara Law School in 1947.

After graduation, Bob and Gwen explored the central valley for possible sites to establish his law practice from Madera to Marysville. After several offers, they decided Lodi was the ideal place to start a family and build a practice. With the encouragement and support of Attorney Robert Rinn, Bob commenced his career of some 68 years. He served many families in Lodi during this time while he and Gwen raised four children. Paul, Steve, Wendy, and Tom all survive their father, including seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

During the last 12 years of his practice, he, with the able assistance of his long-time administrative assistant and family friend of 50+ years, Haru Oga, concentrated on trusts and estate cases. Bob served as City Judge for three years in 1952, and he and his wife were active members of Woodbridge Golf and Country Club for many years.

The Mertz’s have had a fulfilling life traveling with Ben and Geri Schaffer throughout Europe, the UK, Spain, and Portugal, all while never forgetting to bring their golf clubs. They golfed in many countries during their travels, including Hong Kong and Japan.

For over 30yrs, Bob and Gwen lived in Ione, CA, overlooking the North Shore of Lake Camanche, where they enjoyed many holidays and Sundays full of swimming, family, and sun.

They also shared with the Mardee, Kidd and Podesto families, a beautiful condo on the ocean at Poipu on the island of Kauai.

Carl Nosse

January 08, 1933 - January 30, 2022

Dr. Carl Nosse passed away at age 89 on Sunday, January 30, 2022 after an extended illness. Born in Irwin, PA , he was the only child of Joseph and Mildred Nosse. A music lover since he was a child, Carl was always happiest listening and taking part in the music around him-formal concerts near his home in Pittsburgh, PA, stage shows, square dances, big bands of the 1940s…all kinds of music. He began playing trumpet as an 8-year-old and was a member of the high school band, orchestra, and jazz band. He won several music scholarships and chose to attend Tarkio College in Missouri, where he received a degree in performance and certification in music education. As a Navy musician he became a staff arranger and performed with bands and orchestras in many countries around the world, including two years in Japan.

Upon leaving the service, Carl returned home to marry Dolores, “the girl next door”, on July 15, 1959, and started teaching music in public school. Not finding the music he wanted for his ensembles, he began to compose music for them. Over the course of his career, more than twenty of his works were published, including commissions and grants from the National Foundation for the Arts as well as National Public Television for educational documentary film scores.

Following a master’s degree at Duquesne University, he attended Florida State University where he received the Doctorate of Music in Composition and Theory. He was asked to join the faculty there a year before completing that degree, and within a three-year period had moved from doctoral student, to faculty member, to Assistant Dean. He served on the faculty at FSU and was Assistant Dean from 1973-1980.

Carl came to the University of the Pacific in the summer of 1980 and was Dean of the Conservatory of Music from 1980 through 1999. As a result of his tireless efforts he was responsible for augmenting student enrollment, introducing new programs and degrees, cultivating and building warm relationships with donors, developing significant endowments, completing the renovation and dedication of the Faye Spanos Concert Hall, and administering the construction of new facilities including the Rehearsal Hall, the Recital Hall, the Music A/V Library Suite, and the Buck Hall classroom and teaching studio building. In addition, he collaborated with alumni and Regents in founding the Festival of the Arts and the Pantheon of the Arts at Pacific.

Dr. Nosse’s community activities in Stockton include memberships on the Board of Directors of the Stockton Opera Association, the Haggin Museum Summer Arts Program, the Friends of Chamber Music and serving as Commissioner with the Stockton Arts Commission.

In 1991 Dean Nosse was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Schools of Music. He was a visiting evaluator and consultant to 21 colleges and universities in the United States. He was also an Affiliate Board Member with the Music Study Abroad Program at Regents College in London, England.

A long-time admirer and friend of Dave and Iola Brubeck, Dr. Nosse served as founding director of the Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific from 1999-2001.

In retirement Carl enjoyed golf, trips to Palm Springs and Napa, reading, listening to music, collecting numerous Dave Brubeck albums, and fine dining.

Carl Nosse will be missed by the Pacific and Stockton Arts Community. He is survived by his wife Dolores and his daughter-in-law Alicia and was preceded in death by his son, Steven, who received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Pacific in 1986. Also survived by niece Dana (and Bill) Kretchmar of Florida, Kirk (and Lori) Franke of Florida, and Mark (and Jeannie) Franke of South Carolina. Also cousins Rodney (and Toni) Whitehead of Indiana;, Lynette (and Bill) Gilossa of Pennsylvania; Beverly (and Randy) Ference of Pennsylvania; Shirley Clair of Pennsylvania; and Carla of Pennsylvania; and Bruce and Frank Nosse of Pennsylvania.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 16th at 1:00 PM at the Vineyard Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, 14165 N. Beckman Rd, Lodi, CA 95240 , followed by a reception at Pietros Restaurant, 317 E. Kettleman Avenue in Lodi.

Benjamin Galindo

February 1, 1944 – January 18, 2022

Benjamin Lee Galindo was called home to be with the Lord January 18, 2022. Benjamin was born on February 1, 1944 to Perfecto and Precila Galindo in Big Spring, Texas. In 1945 the family moved to the Lodi area where he grew up with his 9 siblings. Benjamin, known to many as Ben loved the Lord with all his heart and all his might. He showed love to everyone he met, always putting others first. Ben only saw the best in everyone, he truly had a heart of gold.


On May 6, 1972 he married his beautiful wife Sofia. Over 49 years they raised a family, ran a business and ministered together. Ben was father to 3 sons Benjamin Jr (Marcela), Mark (Eleanor) and Daniel (Andrea). Grandfather to 6 granddaughters, 4 grandsons and 5 great grandchildren.


Prior to his marriage to Sofia, Ben served in the United States Marine Corps for 8 years, earning the silver star and the purple heart. He also served in the National Guard. Ben was a proud marine inspiring other men who looked up to him to also serve. Ben's greatest passion was talking to others about Christ. He was an ordained minister for over 45 years, serving as a Missionary, a Sunday school teacher and a Pastor. Ben traveled with "Upon This Rock Ministries", building churches and helped those in need in other countries. As a Royal ranger commander he taught young men how to be godly men. For over 35 years he ran "J&J Bookkeeping" and "Ben Galindo Insurance". These were not just businesses but also an open door for those who needed to talk to someone. Ben was always there with an open heart. He was called Husband, Father, Grandpa, Brother, Tio and Friend. He will truly be missed by his family and friends, but he will NEVER be forgotten.

Roberta Rife

February 19, 1952 - January 28, 2022

In the early hours of January 28, 2022, Roberta “Bert” Gwynn Rife passed away at Doctors Hospital of Manteca in Manteca CA. She was 69 years old.

A lifelong resident of California, Roberta was born in Modesto on February 19, 1952 to Agnes Joy Wright and Donald E. Wright. Roberta is survived by her daughter, Melissa Katzakian, her son Joel Gonzales; her son-in-law, Charles Katzakian; her grandchildren, Carissa Katzakian and Kyle Katzakian; sisters Donna McElroy and Sharon Rodgers; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; sister Rita Taylor; and brothers Mike Wright and Kenneth Wright.

In her early years, she worked as a hairdresser, but later kept that as a side talent for close family. She was close to retirement from ExtraSpace Storage, where she will be remembered by her customer service skills and close friendships with colleagues. Roberta can best be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved life’s simple pleasures.

At the family’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.

Instead, they ask that friends and loved ones embrace the memory of Roberta when you hear a Willie Nelson or Bob Marley song, watch any episode of CSI, order Jamba Juice (specifically Dream Machine), play a slot machine, attend a concert or musical, watch a sunset with a good cup of coffee, enjoy the sounds/sights/smell of the beach and ocean, tend to your houseplants, spend an afternoon thrift-shopping – all things that Roberta loved.

She will be missed more than words can convey.

Patricia Lynch

June 2, 1936 - January 27, 2022

Patricia Ann Lynch, of Stockton, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022. Pat was born on June 2, 1936, in Denver, Colorado. She was employed 25 years at the County of San Joaquin as an Information Systems Analyst and retired in 2003.  Not ever “retiring”, she became a proud and active member of the San Joaquin County Employee Retirement Association.

Pat was preceded in death by husband, Robert Lynch, her mother, Ruth; father, Don; brothers, Jim and John, sister, Barbara and granddaughter, Britney. She was an amazing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sister, Sister-in-law, Aunt and a true-blue friend to so many.  Pat leaves behind her children, Bobby Lynch Jr., Sandy Miller (Mike), Randy Lynch, her granddaughter Samantha Finley (Spencer) and great granddaughter Blake, step-grandsons, Myles and Jaden Miller. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins. 

Growing up in Colorado and meeting Robert at 14, they later married and raised three children.  The family enjoyed life in Colorado but moved to California to start a new life.  Pat always enjoyed the activities that family life had given her; stock car races, kids football games, motocross racing and horseback riding, cheerleading events, music events & family gatherings. Most recently her joy was having a great granddaughter. She loved playing games, like Bunko, and she was a beloved member of the Lodi Woman’s Club, ABWA, SJC Retirement Association & the Red Hat Society. She loved her family and family celebrations, especially at Christmas time. She was an awesome tap-dancer, seamstress, an accomplished porcelain doll-maker and a painter.

SERVICES:

Friends are invited to attend Memorial Services on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church. Lunch to follow.

Sheridan "Red" Redman

July 09, 1941 - January 25, 2022

Sheridan “Red” Redman of Galt, CA entered into rest on January 25th, 2022 with his children by his side. Red was born on July 9th, 1941 in French Camp, CA to Bill and Jessie Redman.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Claudine (King) Redman and his parents, brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, Gregory Redman (Tina) of Acampo, CA; daughter Rebecca Redman of Galt, CA; grandson, Lance Redman of Tacoma, WA; granddaughter, Amy Krause (Jeremy) of Valley Springs, CA; great grandson, Jackson Krause of Valley Springs, CA; and loving friend, Marilyn Copeland of Lodi, CA.

Red graduated from Lodi High School in 1959 and shortly thereafter he joined the US Navy. After being discharged he married the love of his life Claudine King. He worked various jobs until he was hired by Woodbridge Fire Department. After a long career as a fireman he opened his own business, Galt Door and Trim. He then moved on to cabinetry as well as several other woodworking projects. Red enjoyed being around family and friends, and loved to fish.

Red will be dearly missed.

Kirk Olsen

August 14, 1962 - January 24, 2022

Kirk Lawrence Olsen passed away January 24, 2022, in Lodi at the age of 59. Born August 14, 1962, in San Francisco, Kirk has lived for the past 23 years in San Joaquin County, and lived previously in Antioch, Martinez and San Francisco for many years. Kirk was a truck driver and owner of a steel processing plant: Universal Service Recycling, Inc.

Kirk was a social butterfly making friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Riding his motorcycle was a passion he had since a child. Kirk loved watching wrestling and old westerns. He liked to take long drives with no destination just to see where he would end up and have an adventure. During his car rides he would sing every genre of music. He enjoyed traveling to the Hawaiian Islands as often has he could. Once he traveled there the first time, he stopped saying Hello and Thank you changing them to Aloha and Mahalo.

Kirk was a two-time kidney transplant recipient. Being on dialysis never slowed him down, he was a WARRIOR! He inspired people in situations like his to keep fighting and never give up. He would take time to explain the steps he took to get a kidney hoping his knowledge would help someone else receive one. The gift Kirk gave to this world was the way he touched everyone’s life that he met.

December 1, 1984, Kirk married his first wife, Ana Olsen, they spent 24 magical years together until Ana passed away in 2008. They had two children Alexis and Anthony. July 10, 2010, he met Lori. They married on September 11, 2018, spending the last 11 years happily together.

Kirk is survived by his wife Lori Olsen; his children Alexis Williams, son in law Chris Williams and Anthony Olsen; stepchildren Crystal, Sabrina, Vanessa, and Chris Casas; grandson Landon Williams; step grandchildren Caliana, Mariah, Victor Jr, Athena, Gemma, and Taylor; brothers Joseph and Greg Olsen.

Tom L. Maragliano

February 18, 1928 - January 11, 2022

Tom L. Maragliano passed away on January 11, 2022, at the age of 93 years. Tom was born on February 18, 1928 to Tony and Lizzie Maragliano in Stockton, California.


Growing up, Tom lived on Hwy 88, across from the old St. Michael’s Church and attended Edison High School. After high school, he went into the Service, did his basic training in Washington State, and then was part of the occupying forces in Japan. After discharge from the Army, he farmed with his Dad, and quickly realized that farming was not his future. Tom then went to work with John Mandress in his dragline/backhoe business. He later became a partner; the business then became M & M Ditching Contractors. Tom eventually bought John out, running a successful business until his retirement in 2005.


As a young man, Tom enjoyed attending the local dances, and met Bev Garibaldi at a dance in the gym at Linden High School. They married in May, 1955 and lived in a house on Flora Street in Stockton. Tom and Bev lived there until 1963, when they moved to a house in the country, on Baker Road. Tom enjoyed getting together with his many different sets of friends, vacations to Lake Tahoe, Santa Cruz, and camping with the trailer. He belonged to various clubs, including The Italian Athletic Club, Waterloo Gun and Bocce Club, and the Linden Lions. After retirement, he and Bev traveled the country in their motorhome. He was never short of things to do. Tom loved his Italian heritage and enjoyed making wine, salami, and olives; he may even have built a still to supply his brandied cherries! Tom also liked to golf, fish, and deer-hunt, but his real passion was his airplane (N8466Zulu) and flying. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Bev; daughter Pam (John Zidich), son Tommy (Yvette); 4 grandchildren: Katie Mann, Ali Zidich, Nick Maragliano and Gianna Maragliano. Tom is preceded in death by his parents, sister Frances and brother Richard.

SERVICES:

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 25th, from 1:00 to 3:00, at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 E. Industrial Way, Lodi, CA 95240.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 26th, 2022 at 10:00am at Vineyard Chapel, 14165 N. Beckman Road, Lodi, CA 95240.

Due to Covid protocols, masks are required at both venues.

Burial will be private.
