Eiberta "Bertha" Torres

February 09, 1939 - February 13, 2022

Eiberta “Bertha” Torres passed away at St. Joseph’s Medical Center on February 13, 2022.

She was surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was born in Artesia, New Mexico on February 9, 1939. Bertha is survived by her sister Cleo Sierra; her children, Virginia Reyna, Grace Ceniceros, Elizabeth Duhart, Rachel Torres (George Lackey), Steve Torres and Paul Torres (Anna Palacio); her grandchildren, Veronica, Anthony, Michael, Faith, Teresa, Aimee, Angela, Hannah, Sarah, Elizabeth, Matthew, Marcus, Danielle and Paul Jr.; her great grandchildren, Aaron, Michael Anthony, Matias, Nicholas, Mila and Dominique.

She will be greeted in heaven by her husband Frank Torres, grandmother Lupe Dominiquez, mother Celia Saucedo, sister Victoria Torres and grandson Nicholas Duran. Bertha and her family moved to Stockton, CA in the 1940’s. Bertha worked hard her entire life, beginning in her youth as a laborer in agricultural fields with her family. She worked as a housekeeper at Fulton Villa, Plymouth Square and Venetian Terrace. She was also a union representative at Plymouth Square. She later joined her best friend Angie Maldonado in private business providing caregiving and housekeeping.

Bertha was a dedicated volunteer for St. George’s Church and School. She organized rummage sales, prepared and served school cafeteria meals, and held responsibilities for fundraising at the annual church festival including bingo and cake booths, baking many of the delicious cake prizes.

Bertha’s passion for cooking was matched by her culinary skills. Many who had the good fortune to break bread at her kitchen table will tell you her flour tortillas, refried beans and tamales were the best they ever had. Bertha enjoyed time in her garden, needlework, quilting and listening to mariachi music.

Bertha’s home was open to all. Her children knew better than to let a friend or coworker go without family or home-cooking for the holidays. The love she had and gave was never more present than in the meals she provided.

Organizations that were dear to her were St. Mary’s Dining Room and Ronald McDonald Charities. Bertha’s ashes will be spread on a future date. Family and friends will be notified of a celebration of life to be held later this year. However, the celebration can begin now by donating to those organizations listed above and of which she was very fond.

Teresa Russell

November 19, 1958 - February 12, 2022

Teresa Russell went home to be with Jesus on February 12th, 2022, after losing her battle with COVID. Teresa was born in Lodi, CA on November 19, 1958 to Linnie and Harold Staggs.  She graduated from Lodi High School in 1976 then moved to Susanville.

Teresa married Jonathan Purvis in 1981 and welcomed three gorgeous, talented, intelligent, and witty daughters from 1982-1984.  Her daughters were gifts to her, and she took pride in being their stay-at-home mom.  She taught them resilience and patience, kindness and strength.  She also imparted her astonishing cooking skills to them, especially to her middle daughter, Ashley.  Less so to her youngest, Morgan, who adamantly disagrees. Actually, that’s a lie. Morgan got Teresa’s talent in the kitchen. Jamie is the best cook baker. Who is writing this thing, anyway?

Teresa loved her children and was blessed with memories with all six of her grandchildren.  Whether traveling to Washington, Montana, Texas or just across town, Teresa loved to play peek-a-boo with them as babies, singing to them at bedtime, cooking chocolate chip pancakes, and weekly FaceTime calls in between her visits.

Teresa remarried in September 2000 to Robert “Bob” Russell. They enjoyed golfing together in the sun, Teresa reliably in her sun visor, and would later open a restaurant to share her love for food, friends, and gathering within the community. Teresa enjoyed time in her garden--planting, cultivating, and harvesting fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs.  Her daughters also enjoyed the bounty, often eating fresh tomatoes off the vine with a saltshaker in hand.

In 2010, Teresa’s twin brother and sister passed away. However, the same year, she gained two sisters and a brother after discovering three half siblings whom she had never met. She was immensely grateful for this surprise and spent the last decade developing connections and meaningful relationships with them and will be greatly missed by all.

Teresa is survived by her daughters Jamie Purvis, Ashley Corbally, and Morgan “Bubba” Ackley (Mat), and husband Robert Russell; sisters Cari Neely, Denise Wade (Dan), and Katherine “Kathy” Fleming; brother Bill Kenoyer (Joanne); her parents Harold and Linnie Staggs; her favorite granddaughter Alison Purvis (“Ali-oop”) and grandsons Ryan Angel (“Ry-Ry”), Peyton Corbally, Luke Ackley, Liam Corbally and Eli Ackley; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Teresa was preceded in death by her sisters Sheryl (“Sherry”) Staggs and Cynthia (“Cindy”) Davis, and her twin brother Robert (“Rob”) Staggs who, as it would so happen, also passed away on February 12, 2010.

Teresa was known by many names, including Aunt TT, Nana TT, Grandma Teri, Grandma, Honey, and most importantly, Mom.  Her life was a gift, her memory a treasure.  She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.  Rest well, Momma, we love you so.

Vernon Vignolo Jr.

December 6, 1930 - February 11, 2022

Vernon Lewis Vignolo Jr., of Linden, CA, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2022, at the age of 91. Vernon was born in Stockton, CA on December 6, 1930, and spent most of his life living in his hometown of Linden, CA. Vernon was proceeded in death by his parents Margaret Vignolo (née Jacinto) and Vernon Lewis Vignolo, sister Norma Jean Vignolo, and his son Vernon Lewis “Chippie” Vignolo III. He is survived by his wife Novella Marie Vignolo (née Hash), daughter Chantel Vignolo, grandchildren Tacoma Tomilson (née Peets) and Stephen Tomilson, Reianna Peets, Timothy and Stacey Vignolo, Tyler and Lisa Vignolo, and his sister Linda Armanino (née Vignolo). He has four great-grandchildren: Amos, Karen, Greyson, and Iris. He is also survived by Daniel Shanahan and Jerry “JR” Reed, both of whom he regarded as adopted in love as his sons.

The son of farmers, Vernon was raised in Linden, CA and spent his youth exploring the rivers and creeks of the Central Valley, riding motorcycles, enjoying great conversations with Linden friends, and spending time with his grandparents, aunts, and uncles who lived nearby. He and Novella met as children in Bellota, CA and were married on December 29, 1951. During their 70 years of marriage they lived in California, Georgia, Texas, and overseas. Vernon served in the U.S. Air Force as an airplane mechanic between 1950 and 1955 and was deployed to the state of Georgia as well as to Casablanca, Morocco during his service. Upon retirement from the U.S. Air Force, Vernon and Novella returned to California where Vernon ran a foreign auto body shop in Modesto, CA, and later took over the Vignolo family ranch east of Linden in Bellota, CA. There he and Novella farmed cherries, apples, and walnuts. On the ranch Vernon and Novella lived next to their daughter and granddaughters and were able to enjoy years of seeing the next generation grow. During the mid-2000s, Vernon and Novella moved to Dickens, TX to care for Novella’s mother, Veda Hash, and to maintain the Hash family ranch. Vernon made lifelong friends in Texas and everywhere he went. He and Novella moved back to Linden, CA full-time in 2014.

Vernon loved anything mechanical, especially sports cars and motorcycles, and he had a great appreciation for animals, plants, and the beauty of the natural world. His interests included archaeology, geology, ocean life, the Spanish language, and desert environments. He and his wife spent many years exploring the U.S. southwest and Baja California where they rock hunted, fished, camped on the beach, and enjoyed the company of friends far and wide. They also spent many years as pit crew for foreign car auto racing events in California and volunteered for multiple years with the Flying Samaritans in Baja California.

One of Vernon’s favorite pastimes was reading car magazines and National Geographic over a cup of coffee. He also enjoyed spending time in his auto shop on the ranch, hanging out with his dogs Watson and Boadicea, and connecting with friends and family who would stop by the ranch to catch up and enjoy Novella’s Italian cooking. Vernon was also artistic, had a keen interest in learning how things worked, loved to meet new people, and yet also appreciated a quiet moment sitting on the patio watching the birds and cars go by. Vernon was someone who felt emotions deeply, had a playful sense of humor, and loved his friends as family. Vernon will be missed and remembered by those who knew him for his hearty laugh, kindness, gentle spirit, charm, love of good food, friendship, and his ability to make anyone feel welcome.
