Julie Hilt

February 16, 1928 - June 23, 2022

Julie Ann Hilt (Bootie), passed away peacefully at home on June 23, 2022 at the age of 94. Julie entered this world as the fifth child of Daniel and Mary Gallego, in Pacoima, CA on February 16, 1928, one year before the great depression. Although the depression lasted through her early childhood, mom always reflected back that those years spent working with her parents and siblings in the fields of Riverbank, CA, were the best of her life.

For 94 years, family was always the core and focal point of her life and soul. Mom’s unconditional love shined through her service for others. She worked for 30 years serving others at the Fiesta (as owner), Carmen’s, Porfi’s and Miguel’s Mexican Restaurants. She then went on to work 20 years with children at Stockton Unified School District as a bilingual aide. Mom was very skilled at painting ceramics and creating flower arrangements. She loved fishing, camping, and of course, the slot machines. Mom was an influence to her family and friends with her faith in God and was a beloved Godmother (Nina) to many. She lived her Cursillo Retreat in her 80’s and grew her love for many close friends throughout her life; closest among her were Pumpkin, Ali, Sharon, Sally and Annella. Her cooking skills, especially tamales, were taught to many family members and friends alike. Mom was the last surviving sibling of Daniel and Mary Gallego and the Matriarch of our family. She is greatly loved and will be abundantly missed. May God bless all of you and keep each of you in His loving arms. Vaya Con Dios!

In 1959 Diana and her family moved to Sunnyvale, where Diana graduated from Sunnyvale High School in 1959. In 1986 Diana settled in the San Ramon Valley, where she lived for over thirty years. Diana spent the last ten years with the love of her life, Robert Young in El Cerrito, California.

Diana was a trailblazer for women of her era, with a vibrant career in the aerospace industry.  After working for Teledyne Ryan in San Diego for 5 years, she dedicated 34 years of her life at Lockheed Martin. There, she earned many awards working on countless projects as a technician, including the Milstar and the Hubble Space Telescope, the ABL Space Station, the Gravity Probe B gyroscope, and Star Wars Laser Program. Her proudest achievement was her work on the NASA Viking Project, which was the first U.S. mission to land a spacecraft on Mars to take photographs, collect data, and look for possible signs of life. We are thankful for her service in advancing the boundaries of science and the defense of our country.

Diana loved her children and grandchildren most of all.  She was a hardworking, devoted mother who did so much for her children. Diana was admired for having a bold and brave personality, and she never shielded away from speaking her mind.
