Roy Caster

December 8, 1938 - July 26, 2023

Roy Caster, 84, of Lodi, passed away peacefully on July 2023, in Lodi, California, after a long illness. Roy was born in Placerville, California, on December 8, 1938, to Elmer Caster and Julia Berry Caster. He graduated from Nevada Union High School and attended Fresno City College. He became an operating engineer in 1964 and worked in California, Hawaii and Utah. Roy liked and enjoyed his work.

Roy is survived by his wife, Shirley Caster, of Lodi; sons, Roger Caster, Roy (Janet), Linc (Cindy), and Mike Caster; stepchildren, Jana (Chris) Baker and Steve Nesmith; brother Tom (Judy), sisters-in-laws Betty Caster and Barbara (Kris) Cochran, and Julia Hulme; brother-in-law, David Bjork; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Julia Caster; son, Darryl Caster, brother, Elmer Caster, Jr.; and sister, Judy Harvey.

He will be laid to rest at Cherokee Memorial Park. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donations to your favorite charity or the Bridge Church of Stockton, 703 E. Swain Road Stockton, CA 95207.

Carol Anfinson

December 25, 1932 - July 26, 2023

Carol LaVonne Anfinson, age 90, loving mother of 3, passed away in the evening hours of July 26, 2023, surrounded by her family.

She was born at home on Christmas Day in 1932, Plaza, North Dakota to parents Lillian and Fred Krohn, the youngest of 5 children. Moving to Northern California at a young age, she completed her educational years in Southern California where she raised her 3 children: Steve, Cindy and Bob.

Carol was a loving, caring, loyal and generous Mother, Grand Mother, GG (Great Grand mother), Sister, Auntie, and Friend. Her family was her "everything", so evident in how she loved on them and always put their safety and best interests first. That was Carol..., Christmas Carol,

While raising her children, she was employed in the Banking Industry for many years and completed her professional career at Lodi Memorial Hospital in the Admitting department as the Admitting Desk Greeter. Everyone that she worked with loved her and her compassionate and thoughtful ways, always smiling.

Carol was very skilled in "handy work" sewing, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch and in her last years learned a new skill, Diamond Painting. She truly loved making baby blankets, sweaters and booties for all the new babies that came into her life, including her Grand children and Great Grands. So many family and friends have been left with some of her most beautiful Afghans to cherish.

She is preceded in death by her parents Lillian and Fred Krohn and brothers Kenneth, Dwayne, and Allen(Bud) Krohn.

She is survived by Steve (Carol) Anfinson, Cindy (Pat) Coe, Bob Anfinson and partner Linda, grand children, Dan (Adrina) Anfinson, Shannon (Martyn) Orpiano, Heather (Laura) Islami , Jonathan Anfinson, Ryan (Brooke) Coe, Sean Coe and Michael (Lindsay) Coe, great grand children, Bradyn, Yousif, Reid, Madeline, Emma, Avery, Declan, Asa, and Sydney. She is also survived by her sister Betty and many nieces, nephews and friends.

SERVICES:

A graveside funeral service will be held at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery, Lodi, on Aug. 4, 2023 at 1 1:00 am, with a family viewing at 9:00 am.

Reception to follow at Dancing Fox Restaurant and Winery, Lodi.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association or United Cerebral Palsy.

Marlo Kerner

April 19, 1935 – July 24, 2023 

Marlo was born in Pasadena, California to Monroe and Kerner. Amy moved the family to Escalon, Calif. when Monroe joined the Navy, (World War II), and was shipped to
Guam. 

Marlo attended elementary and high school in Escalon where he excelled in music and sports. A fine arts recipient, class president, and football quarterback his junior and senior years, he took his team to two school championships.

Upon graduation he enrolled in Modesto Junior College with a major in music. Thereafter, he decided that being a music teacher was not his preference, he began working for his family furniture stores in Oakdale and Escalon. At that time he began taking interior design courses at UC Berkeley. 

While attending MJC he joined the Naval Reserves and completed 8 years of service. 

At MJC he met the love of his life, Hazel Marie Gambini. Two years later Marlo asked Mr. Gambini’s permission to marry his daughter and it was granted. On June 2nd, 1956 before a large gathering of guests they were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a grand reception to follow. 

Marlo continued working in the furniture business until his family sold the businesses. It was then that Marlo came to Lodi to work at M. Newfield & Son Furniture while continuing and completing his design classes.

He then opened Marlo Interiors, a design shop. It was during this time that Marlo and Burton Towne, III, purchased Wein’s Tavern in Woodbridge and the Woodbridge Feed and Fuel Restaurant became a reality for some 10 years. Marlo designed the interiors, played the piano nightly and the restaurant became a “go to” place. 

Marlo then opened an office in San Francisco and did design & furniture projects locally, the bay area, Southern California, and Hawaii. In the late 1980s when the fax machine appeared, he then realized that he could work from anywhere and he returned to Lodi and kept an office in his home. 

Because music was always a passion, especially traditional jazz, it became a priority. As a volunteer member of the Lodi Art’s Commission, he started a program at Hutchins Street Square “Night Time Live” where he brought professional musicians to entertain. He often joined them with his musical talent. The program successfully continued for some 18 years.

In the early 1990s when the downtown revitalization was launched, Marlo was involved in the design and furnishings, and the opening of Hazel’s Restaurant. 

Marlo was a member of Woodbridge Golf and Country Club for over 50 years where he enjoyed many rounds of golf and travels with Hazel, golfing “Buddies”, and friends. 

Marlo is survived by his loving wife, Hazel; brother, John Kerner (Sherry);

nephew, Michael Kerner (Lisa), children, Simon, Kayci, Miles; nephew, Christopher (Laura); brother in
law, Joe Gambini (Lois); nephew, Rod Gambini (Amdrea); nieces, Tori (Erick); Toni Conrad, their children:
Madison, Anthony (Kamie), Cody: Mindy, Jon, Miguel, Isabella; Lauren, Evan: many cousins and cherished friends. 

Preceded in death - parents, Amy and Monroe Kerner; brothers, Melvin and Jerry Kerner; nephew, Matthew Kerner; sister-in-law, Lila Gambini. 

Services are private.

Sandra Meyers

July 6, 1957 - July 21, 2023

July 6, 1957 – July 21, 2023

Sandra Kay (Flaherty) Meyers, a native and lifelong resident of Lodi, California, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on July 21, 2023, at the age of 66.  

She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was born in Lodi on July 6, 1957, to James and Julia (Stout) Flaherty, the last child of 4 children and the first girl after 3 boys. After graduating from Lodi High School and graduating with an Associates Degree from Delta College in Stockton, she met the love her life, her husband, Gary H. Meyers.  They married on September 30, 1978. In 1989 they welcomed a cherished son, Richard, who was the center of her world and a blessing to his three older siblings.  They celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary before Gary’s death in 2013.

Sandy held the position of secretary to the Lodi Chief of Police for 31 years, from March 1980 to July 2011.  She served five police chiefs, Chiefs Marcus Gates, Floyd Williams, Larry Hansen, Jerry Adams, and David Main before retiring to spend time with and care for Gary.  

Many will remember how beautifully she decorated her home for Christmas as well as the stunning greeting cards she made for friends and family.  She loved rubber stamping and scrapbooking, especially with a group of her friends who met regularly.  She enjoyed the simple things in life, especially spending quiet time at home.  She loved tending her roses, and over the years she and Gary had several dogs that they adored, each a very special one that helped sustain them both.  

Her family is comforted with the knowledge that the week before she passed, she took her first vacation in many years with Richard to visit her Aunt Mary Derby in Oregon where they were on the go every day and had so much fun.

Besides her son Richard, those left to mourn Sandy’s passing include step children Lisa (James) Hill,

Lynn Meyers, and David (Toni) Meyers; eight grandchildren: Max and Simon (Callie) Hill, Alexander (Megan), Allegra, and Xavier Cesena, and Jordan, Samuel, and Rylan Meyers; and two greatgrandchildren Zephyr and Quincy Hill; her brothers Jon and Jeff Flaherty and their families, as well as aunts, uncles, and numerous Flaherty and Stout cousins – and many friends.

Sandy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Gary, her parents, and her brother Daniel Flaherty.  

She will be interred with Gary at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi where her family will be honoring her at 10 AM on August 3, 2023.

Clovis Begley

July 5, 1940 - June 8, 2023

Our beloved Clovis Barry Begley, commonly known as Cody, went to be with the Lord on June 8th, 2023. He passed away in his Stockton, CA home with his wife and love of his life Linda by his side. Cody was 82 years old.

Cody was born to Clifton and Hazel Begley on July 5th, 1940, in Glendale CA. Those around him were blessed by his sense of humor, his strong Christian faith, his passion for animals as well as his amazing "green thumb."

He graduated from Glendale High School in 1958. Cody then married his High School sweetheart Linda on June 12th, 1960. Cody graduated with a BS from Cal Poly Pomona in 1964, followed by an MPA from CSU Stanislaus in 1978. Throughout his life Cody worked numerous jobs before retiring as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist for Cal EPA (IWMB) in 2002. His most recent role was Supervisor of the Waste Tire Program.

He is survived by his Wife Linda; Children, Suzanne Griggs, and Keri (Richard) Valles; Grandchildren, Dana (Tim) Sovinec, Richard (Maria) Valles Jr., Benjamin (Megan) Griggs, and Danielle Valles; Great-Grandchildren, Geneva Sovinec, Logan Sovinec, Rogan Griggs, Bryson Griggs, Gabriela Valles, Scarlet Griggs, and Richard Valles III; Siblings, Clifton (Wanda) Begley, Karen (Alan) Rose and Suzanne Alexander; and many Nieces and Nephews.

We will be celebrating Cody's life at Quail Lakes Baptist Church, 1904 Quail Lakes Dr. Stockton, on August 12th, 2023, at 12:00 PM.

Frank Mills

Frank D. Mills
July 17, 1962-July 20, 2023

It saddens us to announce the unexpected passing of Frank Drake Mills. Frank was many things: a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and a true friend to many. He was a fifth generation Californian, the son of Martha G. Mills and A. Freeman Mills and was born and raised in Lodi and lived there all his life. While still in college, he took over the family farm operation over 40 years ago and went on to farm grapes, cherries, corn and other crops for the rest of his life.

In addition to his farming activities, Frank was a member and past Master of the Woodbridge Masonic Lodge Number 131 and was a member of the Reclamation District 2033 Board. He enjoyed hunting waterfowl as well as the annual autumn trip to Siskiyou for deer hunting with his brother-in-law Eric Merlo and his good friend Peter Costamagna. He was especially adept at grousing about the farmer’s life in a playful way that made it clear it was the only life for him.

Survivors include his wife Arabella, sons Frank Carlo and Henry of Lodi, brother Ed (Joy), niece Morgan Mills (Mark), sister in law Amanda Merlo, brother in law Eric Merlo, niece Catherine Merlo (Vivek) and nephew Philip Merlo. He was predeceased by his parents and by his nephew Benjamin Mills.

Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 4 at the Vineyard Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park located at 14165 N. Beckman Road, Lodi, CA 95240

Tzu Jui Chen

Tzu Jui (TJ) Chen 陳子瑞
Beloved Father, Grandfather, Relative, and Friend 
December 10, 1942 - July 20, 2023

Tzu Jui (TJ) Chen passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023 in Stockton, CA of natural causes. He was 80.

Known as “TJ” by family and friends, he was born in Toishan, China on December 10, 1942, to Kung Ching Chan 陳公正, father, and Chun Wing Chui 徐振榮, mother. TJ lived with his parents and siblings near their ancestral village until he was 18. The first of his family to attend university, he graduated with a degree in food science and moved to Guangzhou. There he met and married his future wife, Way Lon Yung 容衛鸞 in 1969, and they gave birth to two daughters, Lori 陳潔 and Lisa 陳冬. TJ and his family lived in Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States in 1980. He reunited with extended members of his family in Portland, Oregon before eventually settling in Stockton, California, where he lived for 42 years. He became a naturalized citizen of the US in 2001.

TJ lived a full life. He loved taking care of his grandsons, spending time with family and friends and traveling to China. He enjoyed reading Chinese newspapers, keeping up with current events and celebrity news, watching football (go 49ers!), dining at local restaurants, and battled difficult sudoku puzzles from books by Will Shortz, NYT puzzle master, to keep his mind sharp. "Hot Sudoku" was particularly spicy. 

TJ had an innate ability to problem-solve and engineer, building his wife a commercial-grade kitchen and designing and constructing an addition to the family’s home in Stockton. He could bring a solution to life just by looking at a picture, and loved to roam the aisles at Costco and Home Depot finding inspiration, materials and tools for his [mostly-successful] DIY projects. After retiring in 2005, he found joy and contentment in neighborhood walks, dabbling in poetry and art, and tending to his plants (clivia, a favorite) and vegetables in his substantial home garden. He especially treasured his many extended trips to China with friends and family, road trips and vacations with his grandchildren, and hikes on scenic trails.

TJ 陳子瑞 is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Way Lon Yung 容衛鸞, and is survived by daughters, Lori Chan Der 陳潔 of Danville, and Lisa Chen 陳冬 of Cle Elum, WA; son-in-laws, Kenneth Der of Danville and Winter Sanders of Cle Elum; grandsons, Jonathan Der and Rylan Der, both of Danville; siblings and relatives in San Francisco, Portland, Sweden, China, and Hong Kong.

He will be dearly missed but will be remembered for the joy he brought to the lives of all who knew him.

Donations in memoriam of Tzi Jui (TJ) Chen may be made to Jene Wah, Inc., an organization that helped him over the years so that other senior members of the Chinese community in San Joaquin County may benefit from their continued service.
