Michelle Martin

October 12, 1960 - October 24, 2018

Michelle Rene’ Martin passed away unexpectedly on October 24, 2018. Born in Stockton, California, to the late Julius Martin and Alicia Schooler-Hugg (Cutting), Michelle moved with her family to Los Angeles and attended high school.  An outstanding drama student, Michelle loved animals, and often stated that “animals are better than people.” Her classmates sometimes brought their sick pets to her for healing. Following the birth of her oldest son, Julius Martin, she joined the California Conservation Corps on San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Island, becoming a master gardener. Career opportunities in sales followed. Returning to Stockton, she attended San Joaquin Delta College and became a Certified Activity Director. The Bay Area again beckoned, and she took on service jobs in Berkeley, Oakland and Alameda. Here she gave birth to twin sons George III and Joshua Atkinson. Michelle moved back to the Central Valley and became a full-time single mother to her sons, inspiring them to become outstanding athletes and role models for their peers.

Michelle will be remembered for her gentle nature and continuing goal to help young people avoid drugs and alcohol. She was a poet, philosopher, student and teacher. Her departure has left a hole in our hearts, but we will always remember that gentle spirit that encompassed her being.

In addition to her mother Alicia Cutting  (Cecil), Michelle is survived by her loving sons, Julius Martin, George Atkinson III, and Joshua Atkinson, sisters Pamela Brown, Julia Barnes, Mia Terry Samuels (Byron), and Amber Moncrief, four grandchildren, aunt Carol Bowie, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
