Mary Nell Downey Stone

July 20, 1932 – July 23, 2019

Mary Nell Stone, 87, of Riverbank, CA, went home to be with the Lord on July 23, 2019. She was born July 20, 1932, in Wilson, Oklahoma to the late William Earl and Naomi Laura Downey.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother James, one grandchild, Angela Faile, and her husband of 55 years, Holt Norman “Norm” Stone. She is survived by three daughters, Lindsay Patrice Towell of Riverbank, Lorri Dean Faile (Jerry) of Riverbank, Raenell Horn (Wendell) of Citrus Heights, and a son, Norman Earl (Susan) of Searcy Arkansas. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren – Jerry Faile (Arlene) of Tracy, Dennis Mashburn of Sacramento, Trisha Watts (Gary) of Antelope, Angela Worrell (Jim) of Deptford Township, NJ, Jeremy Horn (Charity) of Sacramento, Wendell Lee Horn of Deptford Township, NJ, John Stone (Tia) of Searcy, AR, and Kathryn Hansen (Nate) of Firestone, CO – 21 great grandchildren and 2 great- great grandchildren.

Mary was a devoted mother who cared deeply for her children. As a homemaker, she was involved in nearly every aspect of their day-to-day lives as Cub Scout den mother, Campfire Girl leader, PTA President, Little League team mom, and general “cheerleader” for all the children did. She was also a devoted wife who worked daily side-by-side with her husband for a span of nearly 40 years as they worked together in the grocery business, and as apartment managers for various property management companies in Stockton.

When she was able, she loved gardening and working in the yard. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed weekly trips to the library, “Friends of the Library” book sales, and perusing the shelves of local used book stores. After her husband’s passing, she was an active member of the Daughters of Boaz organization, and as her health permitted, attended monthly luncheons with her friends. While she had been raised to believe, she came to fuller understanding of faith late in life as she learned “more accurately” the Lord’s will for her. She obeyed the gospel and was buried with Christ in baptism on May 13, 2015. She was an active member of the Northside/Cornerstone Baptist Church. Mary will be missed by many, but, most of all, by her children and extended family who loved her deeply. They all await that great and glorious day “when the roll is call up yonder.”
