Harold “Gil” Gilchrist, lovingly known to so many as “Papa,” passed away on March 27, 2026, in Lodi, California, at the age of 88. Born on July 15, 1937, in Stockton, California, Gil lived a full and meaningful life defined by love, service, and unwavering dedication to his family.
Gil was the son of the late Ellen Crewodson Jones and Edwin Gilchrist. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry and Billy Gilchrist, and his grandson, Shawn Callahan Jr.
A proud and honorable man, Gil served his country in both the United States Army and the United States Navy for five years. Following his military service, he dedicated many years to the United States Postal Service, beginning his career as a mail carrier and later retiring as a respected supervisor.
Above all, Gil was a devoted husband, father, and Papa. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Dolores; his children, Lisa Callahan, Shawn Callahan, Stacey (Rick) Vinen, Danielle (Rick) Espedal, Shannon (Sam) Rivera, and Rodney Gilchrist; as well as 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by his love and guidance.
Gil had a deep appreciation for Elvis Presley and was an avid collector of lighthouses and ships, both symbols that reflected his steady presence and love for timeless beauty. He was known for always showing up, whether it was for sporting events, graduations, 4-H gatherings, or life’s everyday moments. His presence was constant, his support unwavering.
He was a man full of wisdom, always ready with thoughtful advice for whatever life brought your way. He was funny, kind, and deeply caring. He was a man who made everyone feel seen, supported, and loved.
Gil’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered not only for what he did, but for how he made people feel safe, valued, and unconditionally loved.
SERVICE
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a service at 10:00 a.m. at Vineyard Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, located at 14165 N. Beckman Rd, Lodi, CA 95240.
