Edward James Frens

August 22, 1924 - October 24, 2019

Ed was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents immigrated from Amsterdam and met for the first time here in America. Ed always expressed gratitude to be born in the U.S.A!

He grew up in Grand Rapids and Zeeland, Michigan. Two weeks before he was to graduate he was drafted into the Army. Fortunately, the US Army allowed him to go back for his own high school graduation ceremony! Ed was a true Patriot serving in WWII in Patton’s Third Army – Mechanized Group. He was decorated with the American Theater Ribbon, 5 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal WWII. He fought in the D Day invasion at Normandy, battle of Northern France, battle of the Ardennes in Germany (Bulge), Battle of the Rhineland, and Central Europe including Berlin, Belgium and Holland. Ed understood and witnessed the sacrifice that freedom represents.

After serving in the Army (1943 to 1945) he pursued and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He lived in a trailer with his first wife while he went to school. He loves to tell the story about building a small crib over the bed in the trailer to accommodate his new baby girl, Charlette Elaine.

After graduation, Ed landed his first job with General Motors. He was driving a Ford at the time. Shortly after he started working there when he came out to his car it had been replaced with a GM car! Ed was integral in the Moon project, working on the project that designed the LEM assent engine. “If that engine failed – our guys would be stranded on the Moon”. Imagine his relief when it worked as designed and the Astronauts lifted off the lunar surface to return home. Ed also worked on RCA satellite design and was involved in components on the Space Shuttle program and commercial airliners.

He moved to California to work in the aerospace industry. He ending up working at HITCO and later was transferred to Parsons of California (British Petroleum) in Stockton. He enjoyed the pace of life in Stockton and remained there for his many remaining years.

In 1969, Ed met the love of his life and God’s perfect gift to him: Marilyn. Together they have two daughters and two sons: Charlette Schwepker (Peter), Susan Crosser (Ron), Scott Reinhardt (Robin) and Terry McGovern (Judy), deceased. Ed has 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Although he has always loved the Lord, Ed had some wandering years in his journey. In the early 90’s, after listening to sermon after sermon at the Free Methodist Church he completely re-committed his life to the Lord. He was 70 years old! Ed was welcomed as a Gideon and ministered with Gideons for 15 years by taking the Gospel to the young people in Juvenile Hall. One of his blessings at the time was to run in to a girl who he had ministered to in Juvenile Hall. He had offered her a Gideon bible and dedicated it with the scripture Jeremiah 29:11. When they reunited, she was able to share that she had a good job and a baby boy whom she named “Jeremiah.”

Ed truly desired to make a difference for Christ and with his faithful soul-mate Marilyn by his side he intentionally impacted lives of many and especially their many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

As his memory faded his passion became making his home and yard available as a ‘ministry of place’. At Ed’s direction, many areas around the yard were designated so that people of all ages could gather to worship, teach and learn about Jesus Christ. He served for a time on the Youth Accountability Board, was on the committee for SCAMPS (Senior Citizens Are Marvelous People) and has opened his home for several Bible studies and for prayer. He was a part of the local Genealogy Group and did a very comprehensive book with stories and pictures along with the lineage of his family. On his mother’s side, her brother and his family were missionaries from Holland to China. Ed’s brother, Jim and wife, Ruth, were missionaries in Japan.

Ed is remembered for his legacy of faith and pointing those around him back to the Lord’s faithfulness.

Barbara Rich

September 23, 1946 - October 23, 2019

Barbara Rich Sept. 23, 1946 - Oct. 22, 2019 Barbara Rich, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Tuesday afternoon. Born and raised in Stockton, Barbara graduated from Stagg High School in 1964. She attended Delta College and worked at the former Stockton Theater and later as a secretary at San Joaquin General Hospital. In 1965 she met the love of her life, Jim Rich. She was one of his first customers the day he bought California Television (now California Electronics). They married in 1968 and had three children. After many years volunteering in her children's classrooms and serving as a PTA board member and president, she joined Jim as book-keeper at "the shop." She continued to work there even after Jim's retirement, continuing the business with her youngest son, Jeff, until her very last day. At 73, she was happy going to work everyday and had no plans to retire. Throughout her life, Barbara was honest, kind, forgiving and dedicated to her family. She never missed her children's sporting events; attending swim meets, water polo matches, soccer, baseball and basketball games. She helped her kids do their homework, encouraged them to read and learn all they could, and demonstrated the strong work ethic her own father had taught her. Barbara was a proud 3rd generation Californian. Her great-grandparents, the Thomsens, were farmers in Lathrop, where a road across town is named for them. Preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Wilhelmina "Willie" Weed. Thomasina Harvey

March 16, 1931 - October 19, 2019

How do you tell the story of your mother's life in a few short words ... perhaps it is best to tell who she was.
Our mother loved God with all her heart and soul. She was a devoted Christian. She traveled to the Holy Land, studied the Bible extensively, participated in Bible Study Fellowship and was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church. Her faith was her strength.
Our mother loved her family. Our well-being was her utmost concern until her last day, October 19, 2019.
Participating in her daughter's lives in PTA, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls gave her great joy ... she was always busy! Along with our dad, we all camped together, traveled to Yosemite and back to the family roots in Michigan and North Carolina. Family events were her joy!
Our mother adored her friends, some friendships lasting over her lifetime. They participated in her life in the happy times and sad times, as she participated in theirs. There were some people she considered sisters. Love of friends was one of her life's greatest blessings.
Our mother loved beauty. As a child her family was very poor but she always looked for the beauty in things. As a young girl she would lose herself in the museums of Washington D.C. They provided comfort and a place to see beautiful things. At the end of her life she had a lovely home and everything in it meant something to her. There were always fresh flowers in it and her daughters continue this tradition in their own homes.
Our mother was a savvy businesswoman. Our father's success in his business was greatly tied to her. She was involved with many, many decisions. Her intelligence and grace were always evident, but that "sweet southern lady" had a backbone of iron and determination.
A family friend said something that was so true, saying mom was the most gracious woman he had ever met. Many people would agree with him. She loved to entertain and have people in her home. When you walked into her home everything was perfect, prepared, and of course, lovely. The food was delicious! What a cook! No one felt like a stranger. All were welcomed with open arms.
Our mother was ill most of her life. She often struggled to do the things she wanted to do, but never complained. She was without a doubt the strongest woman we have ever known. She taught us how to suffer. She taught us how to live fully. She taught us so many things, but being weak was not one of them. She taught us how to live as strong, compassionate women.
Our mother was incredibly generous. Most of the time when she and our father wanted to reach out and give, no one ever knew it. And they gave so much. As the Bible says, "it is more blessed to give than receive" and "to whom much is given, much is expected." This was taught to us from childhood, not by words, but through actions. It is a legacy that she passed on to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well.
Our mother is survived by her daughters, Renae Matson and Missy Gotelli; sons-in-law, Mike Matson and Tom Gotelli; her grandchildren, Shelby, Ashley, TJ, Amy, Anne and Kent; and her great-grandchildren that she so enjoyed, Katie, Colin, Kari, Stella, Quinn and Luke. Her grandchildren through marriage are Dara, Kirk and Jordan. She is also survived by sisters, Kathy Henderson and Joyce Williams.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Keith Harvey; and her brother, Don Williams.
Donations can be made in her honor to Hospice of San Joaquin. We so appreciate their assistance during her final days. Their caring and support was so very comforting.
