Doris Virginia (Frey) Cavanaugh

December 24, 1921 - November 7, 2021

Doris Virginia (Frey) Cavanaugh entered heaven 54 days before her 100th birthday. She lived a healthy and active life only to leave this earth due to natural causes. Born on Christmas Eve in 1921 at her parents home on East Pine Street in Lodi, she spent the next 99 years as a proud Lodian. Her parents, Fred and Salamena Frey, moved to a farm on Alpine Road outside Lodi while as a young child. This was her reason for such a great work ethic. Doris was a member of the Lodi High Class of 1939. She was proud of playing softball for the Flames. After high school she graduated with a B.S. Degree in nursing from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland. After returning to Lodi she worked as an RN for Drs. Mamie Pallesen and Warren Plowman collectively for 40 years (retiring in1985). Doris was married in 1949 to Joseph Cavanaugh who worked for PG&E. They enjoyed traveling throughout the world (China, Russia,Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Egypt and others) along with all areas of the United States. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joseph passed away in 1998 after 48 years of marriage. Once Joe was gone she spent more of her time reading (as she was an avid reader), enjoyed playing her piano and maintaining her daily walks up until her passing. Doris was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic church and Daughters of Isabella. She volunteered for years as a Pink Lady at Lodi Memorial Hospital. If you were interested in any historical fact about Lodi she knew who, what, when, where, and why in regards to that question and had evidence to back her up. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; and her siblings, Esther Frey, Leslie Frey (Kathleen), Evelyn Surran (Ralph), Ruby Lehr (Bob), Nadine Gilstrap (Jim), and Laverne Gantner (Bob). She is survived by her brother, Derald Frey (June); son, Paul Cavanaugh (Kathleen); daughter, Clare Woznick (Rod); six grandchildren, Lisa Kunst (Tyson), A’ine Kosko (John), Scott Woznick, Mark Cavanaugh (Jeannine), Laura Woznick, and Maura Cavanaugh; along with 12 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dan Gormley and Arbor Senior Living for all their kindness over the past 5 years; giving Doris the ability to live independently and the freedom to live her life as she pleased. The last couple days of her life she was supported by Seva Hospice who made the transition from her life on Earth to heaven more peaceful. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seva Hospice 5330 Pirrone Road, Suite 303, Salida, CA 95368. At her request, Cherokee Memorial is assisting in a private graveside service. Corwin J. Jones

October 24, 1942 – November 7, 2021

Corwin James Jones, 79, of Stockton, California passed away on November 7, 2021. He was born on October 24, 1942 to Wester and Nora (Setlik) Jones in their farmhouse near Arcadia, Nebraska.  He grew up in and near Loup City, Nebraska, attending Loup City High School and helping his parents with the farm.

Corwin loved woodshop in school, and considered going to trade school to become a cabinetmaker.  But the teachers at his country school saw his academic potential and encouraged his parents to send him to college, a first in his family. Before pursuing a higher education, Corwin served in the U.S. Navy.  He then earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska, where he met his future wife of 54 years, Linda.  Even after leaving Nebraska for a Master’s Fellowship from Hughes Aircraft in California, Corwin remained a diehard Cornhusker fan. Go Big Red!

He used the fellowship to obtain a Master’s in Engineering from UCLA and worked for Hughes Aircraft for 10 years, including while attending USC for his dental degree. Corwin’s affinity for living in an agricultural community drew him to Stockton, California to start his dental practice, and was where he lived for the next 45 years.  He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and served as president of San Joaquin Dental Society.

Although many knew him as their dentist, he was also renowned for many other endeavors.  Corwin was an accomplished woodworker and wood turner, and was extremely proud of having served as President of the Nor-Cal Woodturners and being a longtime member of Johnny’s and Bay Area Woodturners. Corwin was an enthusiastic bridge player, ready to join any foursome for cards at a moment's notice.  He was an avid sports fan throughout his life, and especially enjoyed women’s volleyball, men’s basketball and football at any level.  Corwin enjoyed the outdoors, pheasant hunting, fishing and spending time on the Delta, catching many prized sturgeon and striped bass.  He was known for his competitiveness, tremendous sense of humor, and passion to teach and mentor others in his crafts.

Corwin was extremely proud of his family and was especially pleased that all three of his children hold Master’s degrees.  Most important to him, though, was that they all are outstanding citizens.  He was also so grateful for the special relationship he had with his brother.

Corwin is survived by his wife, Linda (Spiekermann) Jones; his children, Sharon Hughes (Chris) of Fremont, California, Bryan Jones (Shari) of Fallbrook, California, Melinda Decker (Bill Sunick) of Malvern, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Lauren and Jared Hughes, who are both in college; his brother, Cecil Jones (Janet) of Columbus, Nebraska, and many special extended family members.

SERVICES:

His service will be held on Monday December, 20th, 2021 at 10:00am in the Vineyard Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, 14165 Beckman Rd in Lodi, California. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of San Joaquin.

Betty Worland

November 16, 1934 – November 05, 2021

Betty L. Worland (nee Snyder) was born on Nov 16, 1934 in Springfield, MO to Silas M. and Margarette C. Snyder.  She entered eternity on Friday Nov 5, 2021.

In her early teens Betty moved to Oakridge, OR with her mother and three of her siblings. In 1951 while working as a waitress in Oakridge she met James Worland. They married in January 1952 and five of their six children were born in Oregon.  In 1962 the family moved to Clements, CA when Jim started working on the construction of Comanche Reservoir as a heavy equipment mechanic. In February 1968 their sixth child was born in Lodi.

Betty attended Lodi Cosmetology School in 1974 and practiced her craft at several salons in Lockeford, CA.  She also was employed with Woodbridge Golf and Country Club for approximately fifteen years.

In the early nineties Betty drove the Alaska Highway to Anchorage where she lived for several years, then to Issaquah, WA before returning to California where she has resided since.  Betty had an adventurous spirit and was a gifted artist, enjoyed oil painting and quilting.  She loved, mornings, coffee, flowers, bluegrass music, people and visiting with friends and family.  Sadly, the onset of dementia in 2013 curtailed many of her activities.  She entered Arbor assisted living in 2016 and after two falls, was moved to the Vienna Convalescent facility in Lodi.  Despite many difficulties and heartbreaking events throughout her life, our mother remained upbeat, loving and forgiving-always with a smile on her face.

As her health rapidly declined over the past few weeks, we, her children and grandchildren are forever thankful that we were able to bring her to her granddaughter Kristen’s home to spend her final days surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We rejoice that mom is now with her Lord and Savior and loved ones in Heaven.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Rusty Snyder, James Snyder, Willie Snyder, sister Wanda Oliver and two sons, Michael Allen Worland and Douglas Allen Worland.

She is survived by her children, Daniel (Peggy) Worland, Marieta (Mark) Drumm, Shawnee (Ken) Blackwell and Clint (Lisa) Worland and 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Leslie "Les" Emil Schmid

Janaury 30, 1929 - November 5, 2021

It is with full hearts that the Schmid family announces the passing on November 5, 2021, of their remarkable father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Leslie Emil Schmid (92) of Stockton, California. His daughter, Dawn, was at his side when he passed.

A fifth generation Californian, Les was born January 30, 1929, to Emil and Alice (Katberg) Schmid in Modesto, California. He was a proud descendent of pioneers settling at Sutter's Fort in 1845 before the Gold Rush. Raised in a farming family in the San Joaquin Valley, Les graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in agricultural engineering then served two years in the US Navy at Skaggs Island Naval Communication Station.

After Les returned from military service, his focus turned to harvesting and the subsequent founding of L E Schmid Contract Harvesting Inc. His degree, his farming experience, and his keen interest in farming equipment made him the ideal candidate to adapt combine grain harvesters to the unique farming conditions of California. Starting in the 1960s, Les collaborated over the years with John Deere, Case, and others to adapt and design prototype combine grain harvesters. He also designed and built his own bank-out wagon and called it "Ramo." The bank-out wagon increased the speed of custom harvesting. Les shared his expertise with the Peace Corps in 1975, teaching modern agriculture practices and harvester operation for six months in India. For his many contributions to the field of agriculture, Les was inducted into the San Joaquin County Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2009.

Les's substantial public service and community involvement included years of service as director of Roberts Union Farm Center and a very active membership in the San Joaquin County Farm Bureau as well s the Stockton Chamber of Commerce. He served the Farm Bureau as a Director at Large throughout his life. For over 25 years he served as a chairman of the Stockton Ag Expo Committee and was instrumental in planning the Expo show every year.

Also known as "Schmitty" by friends, Les was a charter member of the Hitch and Bitch Riding and Driving Society. He was active in the Sonoma County Trailblazers and the Reno Sierra Riders. He was a member of the San Joaquin County Historical Society and had also been a member of the Mason Morning Star Masonic Lodge #19 since 1952. Other memberships included the Grandfathers Club of America and the Fire House 5 Gang.

Les and his beloved wife Evelyn "Evie" (Morgans) were married from 1953 until her passing in 2016. They were actively involved in their children's activities, including horses, baseball, and BMX. Les was also known for his holiday gatherings. Friends and family could count on his famous tacos, which he made individually for each party-goer, particularly on the Fourth of July and at the legendary Halloween parties.

Les is survived by his children, David (Becci) of Clovis, CA, Dawn (Patrick) McGuire of Atascadero, CA, and John (Lori King) of Clements, CA; granddaughters Jenn and Nicole, and great-grandaughter Ava all of Clovis, CA; along with sister Dawn Mensinger of Modesto, CA and brother Lewis Schmid of Irvine, CA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Joaquin County Historical Society.
