OBITUARY
With deep sorrow we share the passing of James Benjamin Bufton II, born July 18, 1990, at 9:32pm in Stockton Ca. to parents James & Katherine Bufton. Our world grew dimmer on August 1, 2026, with the sudden loss of our ‘Benny’ whose life was as bold and authentic as the man himself. Beneath his rough exterior was the softest of hearts – one that loved fiercely, laughed loudly, and lived entirely on his own terms.
Benjamin was happiest outdoors, whether he was hunting in the mountains, enjoying his many guns, or simply working on the farm. There was always work to be done, with his dog Butch by his side he could be found mending fences, birthing calves, or doing the daily feedings, but he wouldn’t have traded it for any other life.
Being raised on a farm, Benjamin learned early that worthwhile things required hard work. He spent countless Sundays alongside his dad, tending to chores, fixing what needed fixing, and sharing the kind of time together that became more meaningful with every passing year. At the end of a long day, Benjamin would fire up the barbecue, and father and son would sit down to dinner together. Those ordinary Sundays became some of their most treasured memories. Benjamin was, and always will be, his dad’s special boy.
His father also taught him the skills that led Benjamin to become a diesel mechanic. After finding his passion, Benjamin found a place where he truly belonged at Western Truck Center. There, he built more than a career - he found an extraordinary group of friends. Together, this band of “Troublemakers” shared hard work, laughter, loyalty, and the kind of friendship that becomes family.
He is also the cherished brother of Janel and Shelly, his much older sisters who loved him from the day he was born. They watched him grow, loved him deeply and shared in his every joy and challenge. He didn’t miss a chance to give them a bad time. He liked to remind them just how old they were, that their music choice was boring (have you listened to what he liked?) and he had recently informed them that they were bad drivers. Shelly braked too hard and Janel drove to close to the curb. His loving commentary will be missed. While Benjamins time with us was shorter than we ever expected, the love, laughter, and many memories we shared will remain with us forever.
Benjamin is survived by his father James “Jim” Bufton, his sisters Janel Sansom (James), and Shelly Rayray (Mark). His nephews Dillon Sansom (Elena), Zach Sansom (Hana) and Wyatt Sansom. He is preceded in death by his mother Kathy Bufton who now has him safe in her arms. He is also survived by his extended family, Aunts, Cousins and Friends who have their own special bond with Benjamin.
He was never one for crowds or small talk. He preferred open land, fresh air, and the quiet freedom of the outdoors. But if you were fortunate enough to be welcomed into his circle, you knew how deeply and loyally he loved. He may not have needed many people in his life, but the people he chose meant everything to him.
