Marie Catherine Baden Russell Shane

Marie Catherine Baden Russell Shane
1926 - 2025

Marie Catherine Baden Russell Shane passed away during the evening of September 16th, 2025 at the glorious age of 99. Her life was full of love, devotion, family, friendship, adventures, and generosity.

Marie was born in January 1926 to William and Esther in New York and grew up in the heart of Hollywood. In college, she played basketball and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry. During her youth, her family summered in Lake Tahoe where, in 1945, she fell in love with her first husband, Jack, and they later married in 1946. Marie and Jack worked side by side to build their farm and raise their seven children in Washoe Valley, NV, until Jack’s untimely passing. Marie later married her coworker Anthony in 1971. With love and openness, she welcomed Anthony’s five children into her heart and family. When retirement approached, Marie and Anthony bought land in Auburn, CA to have a warmer climate. They later established a life in Stockton, CA where they surrounded their home with beauty from exotic flowers to an orchard of citrus trees.

Widowed again in 2002, Marie remained a woman of remarkable strength and vitality. She swam and rode her stationary bike daily, often twice a day. Marie was devoted to her Catholic faith as a parishioner of the Cathedral of the Annunciation. She dedicated countless hours volunteering in her community, most notably at the St. Joseph’s hospital gift shop, and in 2013 was honored with the The Bishop’s Award for a Lifetime of Service. Marie was part of the cherished group fondly known as the “Holy Donut Ladies,” who faithfully attended daily Mass at Saint Mary’s High School Chapel. Her community ties were central to her life, and she left a lasting impression on everyone she met through her kindness, positivity, love, and generosity. Proud of her large family, Marie took joy in the lives of her numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives, cherishing the love they gave and the love she returned.

In her later years she became a Resident at O’Conner Woods where she enjoyed walks around the wondrous Oak Trees, pointing out Squirrels, sitting with the Koi Fish and observing the Turtles. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to staff and loving caregivers who loved her infectious smile. She joins her family in Heaven and leaves with us her favorite saying: “I just prayed everyone would just get along together.”

Colette Scott

August 7, 1960 - September 2, 2025

Colette Scott was born August 7, 1960 in Châteauroux, France, the youngest child of M. Robert and Leola Scott. Being the daughter of a United States Airman and a teacher, service to others and education was a foundational part of Colette’s life. Due to her father’s military commitments, Colette and her family lived in multiple places, including Germany, France and Arizona before settling in Stockton, California.

A stellar student, Colette graduated from Franklin High School a year early before continuing her education at UC Davis. She later graduated from CSU, Sacramento where she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a lifetime commitment that would be a focal point for the rest of her life. After graduation, Colette began working for the United States Postal Service, where she worked over 30 years.

While at the post office she met Dennis Ferguson, and would begin a relationship that resulted in the birth of her only child, Aaron Ferguson. Colette worked diligently to make sure her son excelled academically and provided him a variety of experiences. She fiercely supported and encouraged Aaron throughout his life.

Colette was a devoted sister, daughter, mother, and friend who served as the matriarch of the family after her mother passed. Her home was a place where all were welcome and was always filled with lively conversations and laughter. She was fond of traveling, and could often be counted on to plan additional road trips inside of vacations to maximize the sights seen, always optimizing her time with family and providing experiences for her son. Music was an early, constant joy; her love for Prince and Earth, Wind and Fire in particular was well known and passed to many family members.

Colette was always mindful that someone in the community might need something and often held on to items waiting for that need to arise. She continued to honor her mother’s contribution to education by providing a scholarship to deserving students each year. Her community service through her association with Delta Sigma Theta and The Links Inc helped earn her the Susan B. Anthony award.

Kenneth Mori

February 3, 1931 - August 31, 2025

Kenneth Y. Mori of Lodi, CA passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025. He was the youngest son of eight children born to Mr. Naohiko and Mrs. Kijiu Mori in Kapa'a, Kaua'i, Hawai'i.

Ken attended the University of Hawaii where he met Stan Yamanaka of Maui, HI. The two grew to be close friends who enlisted in the ROTC. Upon graduating with B.S. degrees in Engineering, Ken and Stan joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Following completion of their deployment, Ken and Stan applied for positions at CalTrans in Stockton, CA, and accepted positions in highway transportation planning and design. Stan and his childhood sweetheart, Nancy Sakata of Maui, HI, moved to Stockton, CA. Ken moved to Stockton, CA a short time afterward where Stan and Nancy introduced Ken to Nancy's sister, Patsy Sakata, who unbeknownst to Ken would become the love of his life and marry a few years later. Together, the foursome explored the U.S. mainland by car and later built homes next door to each other in Lodi, CA.

Ken's personal life's philosophy was always to "Do your best at everything you do" for a real sense of pride and confidence in work well done. His philosophy was evident in Ken's love of gardening. Ken grew persimmons, lemons, limes, pears, figs, kiwi fruit, cherries, and a variety of herbs and vegetables in his backyard gardens to which he faithfully tended. Relationships were important to Ken. Each Autumn, Ken and Patsy harvested persimmons and shared with family, friends, and neighbors as fresh fruit, dried fruit, and fruit rollups. Ken worked to keep family and friends connected as his family did back home on Kaua'i. Ken often offered their home to family and friends to share meals together or invited them to local Lodi restaurants to catch up.

Ken loved fishing and shared his interest with his sons taking them to Lake Alpine, CA, to fish for Rainbow Trout or to Point Reyes, CA, to fish for Perch. On those trips, Patsy made a traditional Japanese picnic lunch for the family and later in the evening at home Ken and Patsy prepared delicious fresh catch of the day for dinner.

During Ken's 25+ years tenure at CalTrans, Ken traveled state-wide to evaluate highway infrastructure, Ken discovered fantastic places to explore and dine. Always ready to share adventures, Ken invited family and friends on weekend road trips. One memorable day trip was to the Harris Ranch in Coalinga, CA, which finished with a wonderful and satisfying meal, a trip well worth the long drive, naps along the way and fielding his sons' frequent question, "Are we there yet?". Other memorable trips were to Yosemite National Park, where they camped and hiked each Summer.

Ken's wife of 31 years, Patsy Mori, preceded his death in 1995. Ken is survived by his youngest sister Barbara Won and husband Yoon-Ju Won of Seattle, WA, and Ken's sons Kenneth Mori of Sacramento, CA, and Neal Mori of Chicago, IL.

Maralee Phillips

Maralee Phillips

Maralee Anna Moore Phillips of Lodi was called home by her Heavenly Father on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at 95 years of age. Maralee was born on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1930 in West Plains, MO to Thomas Donald and Adah May Rich Moore, the seventh of seven children. Her father passed away in December 1930, leaving her mother to raise Maralee on the family farm as a single parent during the Great Depression. She attended grammar school and high school in West Plains. She and her mother moved to California in 1948. Maralee married Elwood Keith Phillips in Las Vegas, NV on September 5, 1948 and settled down in Porterville, CA. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Porterville, as well as an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church after moving to Lodi in 1971. Elwood was the love of her life; he passed away in 2014 after 66 years of marriage.

Maralee’s greatest joy was being a loving wife and mother, and in gathering her family together for special times or casual visits. Every minute spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled her with joy. She loved her family so much and will be missed by all of her family who love her dearly.

Maralee was very active at St. Peter, devoting significant time and energy to her church. She was a long-time member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Maralee and Elwood brought the program "Growing Kids God’s Way” to St. Peter and served as coordinators and facilitators for many years, until Elwood’s health declined.

Maralee was also very dedicated to genealogy, and was an active member for many decades of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the Union Army of the Civil War, and the San Joaquin Genealogical Society. She enjoyed the fact that both of her grandfathers fought in the Civil War, one for the North and one for the South.

Maralee was active in quilting for a great many years, a skill she learned from her mother. Until late in life, she was a member of Tokay Stitch and Quilt Guild and the TLC Quilt Club, both of Lodi. She delighted in making quilts for family members; she loved teaching young people how to sew and quilt, and to donate quilts to those in need; and she enjoyed making and donating quilts to patients in the trauma unit at the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital, an activity she did through Daughters of the American Revolution.

Maralee is survived by two sons and two daughters – Parker (Carol) Phillips of Piedmont, CA; Elwood (Lori) Phillips of Mooresville, NC; Laura Shults of Mooresville, NC; and Dana Rigato of Stanwood, WA. Maralee is also survived by 12 grandchildren – Beatrice (Michael) Brett of Knoxville, TN; Meredith (Derek) Roth of Concord, CA; Parker Phillips Jr. of Piedmont, CA; Heather (Troy) Peterson of Granite Bay, CA; Justin Phillips of Incline Village, NV; Brooke (Steven) Frugé of Fort Mill, SC; Matthew Shults of Charleston, SC; Adam Shults of Mooresville, NC; Regina (Jason) Tyroch of Porter, TX; Erin (Martin) Roman of Camano Island, WA; Shannon Meier of Lodi, CA; and Kimberly Rigato of Stanwood, WA – and by 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Maralee is predeceased by her parents, by her husband Elwood Phillips, by her six siblings – Jadean Moore, Hubert Moore, Don Moore, Dorothy Barnett, Jack Moore, and Louise Hill – and by her son-in-law Derral Shults.

We praise God for the life and love of one of God’s chosen servants.
