Patrica Ellen Hutchings Carlos

Patrica Ellen Hutchings Carlos

August 31, 1944 - August 1, 2026

OBITUARY

Trica Ellen Hutching-Carlos was an avid gardener, sharing her plants and cuttings with friends. She served her community as a volunteer firefighter and, in 1990, broke barriers by becoming a licensed contractor in the traditionally male-dominated construction industry. There, she found both professional fulfillment and her soulmate, Ermand Carlos. Family and animals held a special place in Trica’s heart. Though she endured the profound loss of her son Wes, and her husband, Ermand, she was able to persevere. She is survived by one son. Her beloved cats and dogs, especially her Scottish Fold, Roxy, brought her immense comfort and companionship. Even in her final years, Trica faced stage 4 cancer with extraordinary strength, courage, and determination. Her legacy lives on in her plants she shared and in the hearts of her friends.

Cherokee Memorial is honored to serve the Hutchings Carlos family.

James Benjamin Bufton II

James Benjamin Bufton II

July 18, 1990 - August 1, 2026

OBITUARY

With deep sorrow we share the passing of James Benjamin Bufton II, born July 18, 1990, at 9:32pm in Stockton Ca. to parents James & Katherine Bufton. Our world grew dimmer on August 1, 2026, with the sudden loss of our ‘Benny’ whose life was as bold and authentic as the man himself. Beneath his rough exterior was the softest of hearts – one that loved fiercely, laughed loudly, and lived entirely on his own terms.

Benjamin was happiest outdoors, whether he was hunting in the mountains, enjoying his many guns, or simply working on the farm. There was always work to be done, with his dog Butch by his side he could be found mending fences, birthing calves, or doing the daily feedings, but he wouldn’t have traded it for any other life.

Being raised on a farm, Benjamin learned early that worthwhile things required hard work. He spent countless Sundays alongside his dad, tending to chores, fixing what needed fixing, and sharing the kind of time together that became more meaningful with every passing year. At the end of a long day, Benjamin would fire up the barbecue, and father and son would sit down to dinner together. Those ordinary Sundays became some of their most treasured memories. Benjamin was, and always will be, his dad’s special boy.

His father also taught him the skills that led Benjamin to become a diesel mechanic. After finding his passion, Benjamin found a place where he truly belonged at Western Truck Center. There, he built more than a career - he found an extraordinary group of friends. Together, this band of “Troublemakers” shared hard work, laughter, loyalty, and the kind of friendship that becomes family.

He is also the cherished brother of Janel and Shelly, his much older sisters who loved him from the day he was born. They watched him grow, loved him deeply and shared in his every joy and challenge. He didn’t miss a chance to give them a bad time. He liked to remind them just how old they were, that their music choice was boring (have you listened to what he liked?) and he had recently informed them that they were bad drivers. Shelly braked too hard and Janel drove to close to the curb. His loving commentary will be missed. While Benjamins time with us was shorter than we ever expected, the love, laughter, and many memories we shared will remain with us forever.

Benjamin is survived by his father James “Jim” Bufton, his sisters Janel Sansom (James), and Shelly Rayray (Mark). His nephews Dillon Sansom (Elena), Zach Sansom (Hana) and Wyatt Sansom. He is preceded in death by his mother Kathy Bufton who now has him safe in her arms. He is also survived by his extended family, Aunts, Cousins and Friends who have their own special bond with Benjamin.

He was never one for crowds or small talk. He preferred open land, fresh air, and the quiet freedom of the outdoors. But if you were fortunate enough to be welcomed into his circle, you knew how deeply and loyally he loved. He may not have needed many people in his life, but the people he chose meant everything to him.

Please come and celebrate Benjamin with us! A Celebration of Life will be held at….

November 6, 2002 - August 1, 2026

Ashley Lynn Garibay tragically passed away at the age of 23 on August 1, 2026, doing what she loved most – serving customers at In-N-Out Burger.

From the moment Ashley was born on November 6, 2002, in Stockton, California, she brought joy to those around her. She had a bright smile that could light up a room. Ashley had an infectious laugh and was often called a “goofy goober” by her best friend Alyssa. Ashley was a friend to all, and no matter what difficulties she was facing, she always found a way to help others find the light in the darkness through her words and actions.

Ashley graduated from Lincoln High School in Stockton in 2020. Adventurous, smart and driven, she loved to cook, read and write, crediting Edgar Allan Poe as her inspiration. She cherished spending time with her family both in Stockton and Mexico and caring for her beloved cats, including Smokey, whom she later named her car after, and Dutchman, who was rescued from an In-N-Out Burger parking lot and named after the company’s famous “Flying Dutchman” burger. Her favorite flower was the dahlia.

Ashley began working her first job at the In-N-Out Burger Stockton store in May 2019 and fell in love with it. She loved to travel and was thrilled to join the In-N-Out Burger All-Star team in 2023 to support new store openings. Through this role, she had the privilege of opening stores across Texas and in Boise, Idaho, Vancouver, Washington, and her final in Twin Falls, Idaho. Her dream was to one day manage an In-N-Out Store.

A devoted daughter, sister, auntie, cousin and friend, Ashley is survived by her mother Sabrina, father Edgar, older brother Alex, younger sister Savannah, grandfather Earl and grandmother Jeanette. She is preceded in death by her grandmother Barbara and great grandfather Joseph.

Janice Stafford-Foulke

December 27, 1946 - July 22, 2026

OBITUARY

It is with deep sadness and abiding love that we share the passing of Janice “Janni” Stafford-Foulke on July 22, 2026, at the age of 79.

Janni died peacefully at Lodi Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family. Her faithful service dog and companion of fourteen years, Sanya, remained beside her.

Janni was born Janice Kay Cowan on December 27, 1946, in Portland, Oregon, to Jack and Evelynn Cowan. She grew up alongside her older sister, Penny. She later married Don Stafford, and together they raised four children.

In 1983, the family moved from Oregon to Lodi, hoping to raise their children near family. That same year, Janni opened a small in-home daycare with only a handful of families.

It became her calling.

For nearly forty years, generations of Lodi children grew up in Janni’s home. Some of the parents who first entrusted their little ones to her became lifelong friends. Years passed, children grew up, and eventually some came back carrying children of their own.

Parents called her “the Child Whisperer.”

Janni seemed to understand children at a level that could surprise you. A little one might arrive crying, angry or in the middle of a full-fledged tantrum, and somehow Janni could reach them. She was gentle without being permissive. Her home had routines, boundaries and expectations, but above all, children knew they were safe there.

She expected kindness. She expected respect. And she gave both freely.

Many of the families Janni served were teachers, nurses and other working parents. She never wanted someone to struggle simply to afford dependable care for their child, so she routinely charged far less than other providers. For Janni, caring for children was never primarily a business. It was something she believed she had been called to do.

Raising four children of her own required tremendous work, and Janni simply did the work.

She often held two additional jobs alongside the daycare. She catered home-cooked dinners that parents could pick up when they collected their children. Her lasagna and chicken and rice were favorites, but her cinnamon rolls earned a reputation all their own.

On weekends, she cleaned Mokelumne River School so her children could attend there.

Her four children also swam for the Lodi City Swim Club, with three eventually continuing the sport in college. Through countless practices, meets, school events and activities, Janni showed up. Again and again, she showed up.

Faith stood at the center of her life.

Janni joined Vinewood Community Church after coming to Lodi in 1983 and treasured the friendships she built there, particularly with her devotional group, the Sonflowers. She rose at 5 each morning to spend time with her Bible before the day began.

Her life rested on four devotions: God, family, friendship and kindness. She practiced them more than she talked about them.

Janni rarely judged people, and she had little use for long lectures. When one of her children, whether a daycare child or one of her own grown children, appeared to be heading toward a questionable decision, she had a way of looking at them and asking one simple question: “Do you think that’s a good idea?”

Usually, that was enough.

After September 11, when her sons Josh and Justin served in the Army, Janni placed a star on her front door for each deployment. Whenever they called home, she reassured them with words they came to know by heart: “I’ve deployed my angels to watch over you.” And when Janni told you she was praying for you, she was.

Those who loved her will remember her eyes. They were a soft, penetrating blue, and they could make you feel as though you had her complete attention. Children felt it. Friends felt it. Family felt it. There was warmth in those eyes, and acceptance, and a remarkable ability to make another person feel safe.

Janni also loved simple pleasures.

She adored Hallmark movies and watched them with the dedication other people reserve for sports teams. Christmas meant familiar stories on television, comfortable time on the couch and, whenever possible, her grandsons beside her. She could watch the same favorites year after year and remain perfectly content.

Janni retired in 2022 and moved to Washington so she could live closer to her children and grandchildren. But she never really left Lodi behind. Each summer, she returned to reconnect with the friends she had gathered during more than four decades in the community.

Her grandsons, Aaron and Oliver, brought her enormous joy. She cheered them on at Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and took pleasure in the ordinary hours with them just as much as the milestones. She tended her front garden with young Aaron and his friend Ruby, who approached watering the plants with considerable enthusiasm, and she delighted in watching both boys grow.

She was proud of the young men they were becoming.

Janni spent much of her life taking care of people. Her children. Other people’s children. Parents who needed help. Friends who needed prayer. Family members who needed somewhere to land.

And for nearly forty years, hundreds of children walked through her door knowing there was a place in Lodi where they would be fed, protected, corrected when necessary, encouraged often and loved without question.

That is a life worth remembering.

Janni is survived by her sister, Penny Schlitt of Portland, Oregon; her four children, Joshua Stafford of Stanwood, Washington, Justin Stafford and his wife, Mew, of DuPont, Washington, Jeremy Stafford of Renton, Washington, and Jannae Posey of Stanwood, Washington; her beloved grandsons, Aaron and Oliver Stafford; her son-in-law, Anthony “AJ” Posey, and his children, Junipper and Jasper Posey, who held a special place in her heart; and her devoted companion, Sanya.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Evelynn Cowan.
